what does this mean?? where to look for a problem??

Did you fuel your car with the enigne running?

Is the gas gap on tight?

Not to worry, ususally the above 2 items are the cause and if so, the code will reset itself after a certain number of complete cycles and a self re-test. Or you can clear the code yourself if you've got a scan tool. Perhaps Autozone (et, al) can do it for you.

If the 442 does not go away after a couple of weeks (or after a reset) then you may have a loose, leaking hose from the tank to the canister.

I too have been getting the same fault 0442 after I replace the pvc trap.I guess I rip the vacuum elbow when I pull it off the nipple on the pvc trap. It turn out to be a small hole/leak in vacuum elbow that attach to the small nipple on the PVC trap. I am waiting for new vacuum elbow from FCPGROTON. I order six of them, I'm replaceing all of them. Good I guess it trail and error tying to find the leak.

I have a 97 V90. Leaving off the gas cap will not set a code, I have tried it. I can only conclude that check was implemented later on. Perhaps he has a problem with purging off the charcoal container after start up.

Leaving off the gas cap will only set the code if the OBDII system is running an EVAP test at the time. I do not know the frequency at which one is run, but if it runs the test and the cap is off or loose it will set the code.
