Rear tailight replacement problem 200 1989

When I have the lights on without the brake being depressed it looks light the brake lights are on??
I got a 1982 ( it has 82 stamped on it) lens to repalce my cracked lens on my 1989. I took the circuit board from the 1989 and put it on the 1982. The problem is I got the bulbs mixed up. After replacing them it looks like my brake light are constantly on the side I replaced. I have been swapping bulbs and sockets 5W, 21W, 21/5W. What should go where I have tried several combinations to know avail. Also when the lights are off and I hit the brakes no brake lights come on (on the the replacement side). help

this drove me crazy, there is a way but to me its not worth it (involves a bridge on one tab, and removeing the little plastic pins on the housing. what i do now if using the wrong tailights is in the white connector i remove the white wires(foglights) and install the yellow wires in the place where the whites were. you lose the fogs, move the brake lights to fog light location. dont know what to tell you if you only have one old taillight and one new taillight. thats my experience. good luck

Rear tailight replacement problem 200 1989

hi big joe. i have done alot of trial and error, and have two 85s one 86 one 87. with different setups. a b.b.er named B.C. helped me the first time. just looked at my extra taillights. the pre -85 brake light bulb slots (3 different sizes) in the taillight housing are in a different location than the 86+. with the circut board switched and the white bulb holder installed i believe the contacts do not touch the circut board where they should. even if you remove 1 or 2 of the little black pins on the taillight that hold the circut board. this is where you have to build a metal bridge to offset the (i believe inward contact) toward center of car back and up to make the proper connection. i may not be great at explaining but have done it. summary not worth it, my solution as stated earlier=move wires, get correct light. hope this helps

Make sure you've got the right socket on the right side. You'll have a black socket on your original lights for the left brake light, and a white socket on the right.
Use those correct sockets, and the correct 1157 dual-filament bulbs. The outer bottom position on the 82 taillight won't be a combination park/brake light; it's just a parking light. That's the only dual bulb in the housing.

Also, clean up the socket fingers with a fine file or sandpaper. I find that a lot of brake lights on these cars won't work right unless the socket is installed, then turned back a tiny bit (counter-clockwise).
Fiddle with it some more!

when you say black socket on the left side do yo mean left side of the individual light or meaning left and right lights on the car. Secondly, which light on the individual unit should light up for braking? inner or outer.

also where do you use the single filiment bulbs

Thanks
