Decision time: Daughter's '89 240 needs tranny. 175k. Clear coat gone on trunk 200 1989

The junkyards here in north Alabama aren't worth a hoot. There are very few wrecked 240s for pickin. I've got to make a decision about whether or not to get rid of the '89 OR take out the tranny and have it rebuilt/find a replacement. One last thing I'm going to do is try and replace the downshift cable...it's definately stuck...and if that doesn't fix the "no-shift-from-1st-gear-when-cold problem", then that's that. (Won't shift from 1st-2nd until a couple of blocks..but ONLY does this in the winter...unlikely that broken downshift cable will cause...but it's worth $50 to try)

As far as the car's health...I JUST finished putting all new struts, motor mounts, ball joints, and tie rod ends. Rear main oil seal leaks. Clear coat on the trunk has peeled off. New radiator. Replaced the 561 ECU w/ one I bought on ebay. Also replaced the AMM w/ one from ebay. The water pump seal is blowing a bit of steam. Motor doesn't use any oil. Also needs driveshaft mount bearing replaced. Also..I JUST finished replacing the tranny mount and the rear tranny bushing (was leaking like a sieve).

The two big problems are that the tranny needs replacing and that the paint job. (daughter ..you know). I figure that I'll end up spending about $300 on a tranny from a junkyard, whereas the rebuild kit costs about the same amount...then add cost of someone to rebuild. I'm willing to remove tranny myself.

I just got done w/ my income taxes and it's decision time now before she goes to school this Fall. Anyone know where I can get my hands on a 1990's AW70 tranny? Oh yeah...I'll need to replace the crankshaft sensor too.

    Hi Cabbie,

Just bought a tranny in Freetown Ma. for my daughter's car. Low miles '92 740 @ $250.00. Here is a number if you need it 1-888-763-4400. I'm assuming they would UPS to you. For the trunk lid, just keep your eyes open in your local yard for same color in good shape, probably $50.00 +/-.

p.s. yard name is:Self serve used auto parts

Long ago, with an obsolete chrysler, faced with the same dilemma, we removed one cooling line and ran a hose to a bucket. Fired up the car and dropped it in gear. Idled this until we had run 20 qts of tranny fluid OUT the disconnected hose. Tranny problem disappeared.I honestly don't know of a cheaper attempt.
Trunks are replaceable for $50 here in Missouri.
    Good luck!

You could try a flush and fill on the tranny with synthectic fluid, flows much better when cold, before giving up on it. Might just be dirty/gummy. As for the paint, just install a new CD player in it with nice upgraded speakers. She won't notice the trunk.

    Cabbie,
I'd say keep the car. my clear coat on my 86 245 is way gone, i'll paint it later.

i haven't had the tranny problems, but my thinking is as long as the engine can run (no rust really in texas), keep it going.

i swear, i am in disbelief every year this car keeps on going. 19 years, 250k+ miles and it still show no signs of dying? this is why i bought another 245, this time a 92 w/ 137k+ mi.

i want to break 500+ mi on my 86, and i have no doubt it can do it.

i would say, keep the car. you'll never find another engine as good as the b230f.

    regards,
    byron golden

As always, "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know".

$500 to fix the tranny + $500 for a cheapo paint job =$1000

    vs.

sell the car for $200 with blown trans, buy another for $1000 and then spend $??? getting the new one up to spec.

    YOU do the math!
