740 gle stalling 700 1988

I have a 740 gle and my problem is that when I am driving, my 740 will stall and go into idle when the revs go above a certain amount or I press a bit hard on the accelerator peddle. The peddle goes really soft and it doesn't rev at all, the car idles alot lower as well as if it is about to stall when it happens. it is also putting out a bit of black smoke, I think it is something to do with the whole fuel system. Its really bad when needing to accelerate hard from a round about or stop sign! I'm thinking it could be either the fuel pump or the air mass meter. thats all i can think of at the moment. Anyone have any ideas at all it would be greatley appreciated. I'm taking her to Volvo soon and hopefully they dont charge me too much for the quote.

Have a look at your air intake hose- the big black rubber bellows from AMM to the throttle/intake.
If this problem goes away when you shut the car off and restart, it's a real possibility that what happens is this: the high flow or vacuum condition of the full-throttle driving causes the intake hose to collapse, and it folds up on itself. From that point on, it holds itself tightly until the vacuum goes away- i.e. when you shut off the engine. Then, it springs back into shape, enough to drive pretty normally till it happens again.

It seems that the original hoses are just kind of soft, or a little too long, and they kind of get a kink in them, a corner instead of a curve. Replace it if it looks like it has been kinked. FCP Groton sells them for a lot less than the dealer.

    Good luck!
