Odd whine from rear end 700 1991

I have a weird whine (like a whale siron) floating around the rear end of my 91-740 T wgn. M46.
It is real loud when the car is parked over night at -15C or colder. It is quiet when it is parked indoors.
It is loudest at around 30-40 kph accelerating /decelerating. It really lessens after car has been driven at 80 kph+ for 30+ min. It continues with clutch depressed & while braking. Can this be a wheel bearing, u-joints or trannie?

It could be the gear fluid in the rear axle is original and when it's cold it gets very thick and is not lubeing the pinion bearings well. Not sure what type of fluid you should replace it with but this may help fix this problem. My old 89 245 with 274K miles has been making noise from the rear axle since I bought it with 204K miles. Hasen't gotten any worse so I haven't done anything about it. I just tell the wife to turn up the radio and "DRIVE IT!"

Good Luck...
