Tire replacement question 700

I am looking to get new tires on a '91 740 that I bought a couple months ago. Does anyone know the OE tire size? I looked on the web and found a site saying P185/65R15, is this right? The tires on it now are 195/60R15. What size should I be looking to get. I do mostly interstate driving and wanted to get the widest tires possible, within reason, so I don't get blown around by cross winds or large trucks. Would a 205/60 or 205/65 tire work, or what size would you recommend, thanks.

    From my manual (89 740 model) sedan 195/60R15. Estate (or wagon) 195/65R15.
    Sticker on the door on the 940 at home (sedan) 195/65R15.

    Binger,

    My 95 944T came with 195/65/15 from the factory. I have since switched to 205/60/15 on the 940 and as well as my 87 745T. The speedo's are accurate and the handeling much improved on spring/summer/fall pavement. Winter snow tires are 195/65/15 on both. BTW, I've had very good luck with Yokohama brand tires, good performance at good prices. Check the tire rack.com or Discount tires direct. My$.02

      I'm thinking of changing to that size. Will the wider tire affect fuel consumption , with the bigger rolling resistance compared to a 195/60? And how does it perform in rain? When it rains where I am it'll rain everyday.

    If your brick gets blown around on the highway, you have some suspension problems.

    All our bricks ride like they are on rails on the highway.

      It doesn't really get blown around, but I still would like wide tires; plus I think it would help with traction in the snow.

        Bzzzt!

        In snow, you want a narrow width. More contact pressure on the footprint for a better bite.

        In the dry, you want wider for more rubber contact to the ground. In the wet, it's not so much width anymore, but the tread pattern to channel the water out.
