Automatic Shifter play and wiggle. 700

What does it need? Is it the grommets underneath the car?, or inside? It's loose enough that when in neutral, if shifter's tweeked a little, car won't start.

Thanks!

There is a plastic bushing in the shifter linkage rod underneath of the car. This wears out and leaves a lot of slop in the shifter. They're easy to replace, just don't lose the clip the holds the rod onto the bushing mount. If it doesn't start when messing with the shifter, there might be a problem with the neutral safety start switch. You can hold down on the gear selector button with the car in park or neutral and it should always start this way even if the switch is bad.

Good luck,
Dave

Cool, it's probably the bushing. The no-start is, if I just wiggle the shifter a twitch out of neutral, plainly too much play. Thanks!!!!

Chris, did you do the "fix" on the sloppy shifter. My 89 740 TURBO wagon has the same problem and for the last week or so, it appears to be stuck in either TURBO or like a thrid gear. Did this problem occur for you as well?

Good luck and good driving,

Rich
