clutch pedal 200 1986

Starting the car in -25 C (-13 F) weather, I got to reverse out of the driveway,I heard a snap right after pressing down on the clutch pedal to shift into first. The pedal does not return to it's default upward position. I believe the cable is broken. Based on my description, what is it most likely to be and how would I fix it?

Thanks

Yep - sure sounds like the cable broke. Replacement is straightforward - get the front of the car up and jackstands, and look at the clutch arm. You'll see how the cable attaches - no tools really needed. Inside the car, you need to access the top of the clutch pedal and remove the clevis pin which holds the cable to the pedal. That's the more challenging part, because space is limited and you need 1 hand for the cable, 1 hand for the needlenose pliers, and one more hand for the flashlight.

Once you have the new cable installed, make sure you adjust it properly - see a Haynes or Bentley manual. The new cable will probably stretch after a couple of weeks, so plan on checking the adjustment later as well.
