$500(!), have you tried Scandcar (Netherlands)? When I purchased my 122 dash from them 2 years ago, the dash was way way way less expensive than any American based source I checked with. Even with shipping, I saved big bucks going that route (and as bonus, they sell many parts which are "unavailable" or "no longer manufactured" according to the US sources I approached.

Rather than get taken to the proverbial cleaners, I used what you call the "lower priced" dash covers. I found them to be of good quality and they look very nice installed. I did remove my dash to install them but you don't have to, just remove everything from it. I also padded them underneath with some thin foam rubber to make them fit like originals, glued them in place, reinstalled the dash and components and everything looks good. Got mine from IPD but most old Volvo suppliers seem to have them.

Gauges, etc. Everything that you had to disconnect to get the dash out of the car to begin with, if you decide to go that way. You probably want to install the dash caps without any interference from components mounted in the dash. I hope I clarified things somewhat.
