Pandora's Box 1800 1972

Need some help with a friend's 1800. It's sat, indoors, for about two years. From his description (will start and run in neutral, but when running, he can't disengage transmission with clutch pedal) it sounds to me like the clutch disc is adhered to the flywheel.

I advised him to warm it up, turn it off, put it in 2nd gear then stand on the brakes and attempt to start it. Wonder if anyone has had a similar problem. According to him, clutch cable is OK and pushing clutch feels normal. Any comments on what else it might be and what to do, short of pulling tranny, to unstick the clutch plate if that's what's wrong?

    Thanks to all for your advice. My friend used my initial suggestion and after 10 tries it unstuck. However he was fully armed with your alternate suggestions as back-ups. Wish this would happen to me so I could try that MG Club option...the one where you drop the jack. Might be like Top Gun. Knowing me, I'd probably scew-up and have it in reverse and run over my assistant. But, man, we could win on America's Funniest (or Most Tragic) Videos

    I love all the ideas! First, though, he should get under the car and have someone push the clutch pedal, just to be sure he sees what is going on under there. Want to be sure the clutch is actually working properly before going through this exercise.

    I'd do it a little differently.....

    I'd put it in 4th gear AND depress the clutch when cranking it....

    ...and standing on the brakes wouldn't hurt, either...

        When the 'soft' way isn't enough... 1800 1972

        Guys;

        If the disc is rusted on so solidly that the "soft" way using the brake isn't enough, a bit more voilence in the form of impact on the drivetrain is what is needed...see procedure courtesy of the Chicago MG club: http://www.intelab.com/swem/Reviving%20a%20'decomissioned'%20Volvo.htm scroll down to: What the...! No clutch???

        Cheers

    Very astute.........she's stuck..but dragging that car till it runs might also offer a vibration help.

      No, it doesn't have a hydraulic clutch...it's a cable. Could you eleborate a bit on what you've suggested and what Phil has agreed with. Do you mean tow the car? I'm trying to understand what that would do..seems like....ahhh...I get it. Towing it in fourth would cause the wheels to turn the tranny, which would bump start the engine which, when rev'd would make the flywheel and the clutch disc, though both in motion, try to spin at different speeds and..voila..break it loose in a dynamic state. Do I get it?
