Adding a block heater 700 1989

I've been entertaining the thought of a adding a block heater. Has anyone else done this?

The Volvo one replaces a freeze plug. Is this an easy DIY? Do they tend to leak?

I've also heard of ones that install in a coolant line. Do they work well?

Had one of the freeze plug heaters for years on an '85 turbodiesel. Never leaked, never caused a problem as long as I could remember to unplug it before backing down the driveway. Saved a lot of fuel given the time it takes to warm up the engine idling. I didn't install, so don't know how tricky it was.

There used to be one that replaced the oil dip stick, but you had to remove it in the morning and that was just a pain. Lots of MN folks have block heaters, but it is cheaper to have fresh oil, good anti-freeze, and a good battery.

My car starts fine but my wife always lets it warm up for an extended time so the cabin warms before she gets in. I 'd like to have the coolant warmed before she starts the car to avoid the extra idling.
