catalytic converter but no lamda sensor 900 1991

Hi!

My VOLVO 960 model year 1991 (registrated first time dec 90) has a cat but no lambda sensor!
How does it work?
Can I take out the cat in the exhauster line?

The O2 sensor is located on top of the cat just behind the point where the 2 down pipes meet. Its very hard too see. The only angle you can see it from is having your head positioned between the cat and transmission. Its a big pain to remove.
