Test for ignition switch? 900 1995

940 non-turbo

I think my ignition switch is going south.

How do I confirm this? there is no crank when engine has run for sometime. Starter changed already. Transmission safety switch is ok because car start ok when cold.
This leaves only the ignition switch.

Perhaps this could be a cue, car crank and starts ok immediately after the car has run for some time and after switched off. It only fails to crank, (no turning over) after car is left to cool for a while (within 10 min).

What electrical test do I perform before I get a new one. Read that the R & R is quite simple.

Thanks
Laozong

    Of course you checked:
    The battery ground.
    The battery connections.
The hot wire from the battery to the starter and the connection at the strter.
The blue-green wire that feeds the starter coil. This wire originates at the ign switch.

Try this test to check if the ign switch is bad while it doesn’t crank. While the key is in the start position (KPIII) but, not cranking, check for 12V at the starter data service link, blue terminal pink wire, which is nothing more than a wire connected to the ignition switch starting circuit (ahead of the safety switch). If you don’t have 12V, the switch is bad or there is a bad connection.

If you have 12V the at the service link, it’s most likely the safety switch, the wiring or the connection at the starter, not to mention the starter itself.

Thanks Javalion: I've 12V at the blue terminal and 8.67 at the starter blue-green wire. That means the ignition switch is okay and fault now lies with the safety switch or the connection to the starter.

The strange thing is the car would always start okay when cold. If it was the safety switch would it give problem only when hot?

Also, would appreciate it if you could give some pointers to test the safety switch.

      Thank you so much.

Great, sounds like your ign switch is ok and probably the starter. Since the blue terminal is ahead of the safety switch I would be leaning toward the safety switch. I have never had a problem with one but here is some more information.

I think Spook has gone into the area of the safety switch located inside the shifter. You may want to start a new post.
