Hey all,
Long time 900/800/s70 owner, and i just got my first 245, and it s a DIESEL!!!!! this is, belive it or not, the car i have always wanted, since the time i was old enought to drive... A volvo diesel. Nothing could be finer, IMHO.
Anyway, I have to go pick it up later this week, and will be driving it home. I plan on changing the oil (mobil Delvac 1300 or delvac 1) and i have already gone to the Volvo dealer where i get my wholesale discount and have gotten oil, fuel and air filters for it to change in the hotel parking lot before i drive it home....
Aything else to check??? Caveats? things to look out for.
I am so looking forward to this car....
My wife has already named it: Viking Joe. dont ask me.....
She names all of our cars:
1991 Volvo 940 GLE (Ingemar) 285,000 miles
1983 Toyota Land Cruiser HJ-60 (Toivo) 211,000 mile2
2000 Volkswagen Jetta A4 TDI (Vada) not many miles yet, but 50 MPG
1983 Volvo 245 Diesel (Viking Joe) 160,000 miles
Any thoghts appreciated, and i look forward to getting to know u 200 people as well as i ve gotten to know the 940 people over the last year.

Sweet looking car! It looks like the paint is in really good shape.
Congratulations on finding a running diesel 240, too. I was under the impression that there were hardly any still in good working order. Take care of it and hopefully it'll last, though the diesel engine is rarely a sought-out choice. The board will be happy to help out with any problems you encounter, related to the engine or not.

The 200 series diesels are kinda the bastard child of the Volvo family (more so than the turbodiesel 700s or V6 cars). A US spec 200 diesel would have the D24 (2.4L six cylinder non-turbo diesel), the 700s got the D24T (turbo version of said engine), and of course the D20 (2.0L five cylinder diesel) was available elsewhere.
As a non-turbo, the D24 is gutless (about 80hp) and does not yield great mileage (probably low 30s). To do much of the regular maintenance you'll need to buy some special tools (some are probably shared with other Bosch VE injection pump cars, some are specific to the VW truck motor).
There's also a list for Volvo diesel owners:

Great looking brick. Do you have the center caps for the Corona wheels? They occasionally show up on eBay, prices all over the map. I have a few surplus to need.
The thing to make always certain of is the timing belt. Not only is the D24 an interference engine, like all Diesels it is an extreme interference engine.
Had a buddy with one, belt let go. Camshaft broke into 5 pieces and crank was twisted. Repair (new engine) exceeded car value so he had to write it off as a total loss.
the VW stamp is on the left front of the head. It is a VW truck engine and not, unfortunately, a turbodiesel.
Other posts have good info.
Good Luck,
Bob

Oh man. If I had that car, I wouldn't be able to resist putting in an extra tank and raiding the local resturants for veggie oil.

Where would you put the extra tank and what would it be made out of?

Congratulations on the new family addition! Piston-ring-sets for your car are sold in pairs because VW Rabbit uses the same.(diesel)If you look closely, you'll see the VW emblem stamped in the head casting. The best manual I have seen regarding the fuel-pump is Clymer, and difficult to come across.I've bought salvage yard pumps which people simply didn't know how to adjust. Great mileage! Best bet is to replace all glow plugs on a schedule decided upon by your driving pattern. They can ALL be replaced w/o much ado if you are patient!

I would love to have a diesel Volvo. Who is the maker of the diesel engines in the 240 series? Didn't they use somebody else's engines?

VW, i think. It's a D24? Six cylinder diesel or something like that?

I've had my '82 245 diesel since 1985. It had only 71K when I bought it and it now has almos 240K miles on it. Frequent oil changes (every 3k miles)are a must w/these engines as the rings will wear out otherwise and it won't start easily. These cars are real slugs but once you get them up to speed on the highway they really run nicely. I had a timing belt break on mine once and it destroyed the camshaft and most of the valves. Making sure that the cambelt is changed every 75K miles is imperative othewise you can toss the engine away and probably junk the car. The volvo diesel is a rare bird now and probably will only increase in value as a collector item someday.

Simply breathtaking! I owned a VW passat turbodiesel for a few years and I miss the incredible mileage terribly. Please let us know your mpg on your drive home. My passat averaged 43 mpg and I could easily drive from Michigan to Alabama on one tank of Amoco premium #2 diesel (cruise set at 80 mph...seriously, ask anyone in the forums at tdiclub.com). Those German electrical gremlins constantly plagued me so I'm trying out the Swedes for a while but my 245 sucks fuel like a starving coon hound. Hmmm, maybe a diesel engine swap? Concerning your new purchase, the engine longevity is more closely tied to fuel quality than gas engines so swing into the nearest flying J and pick yourself up a big jug of PowerService DieselKleen (silver bottle for summer, white bottle for winter, red bottle if your fuel has already frozen in the fuel lines). Add about 8 oz. prior to each fuel up and it will boost the cetane rating of our crappy American diesel from 45 closer to the european spec. of 50 cetane. The additive will also increase the lubricity of the fuel which will make your fuel pump and injectors very happy. Consistent use over several months has been proven to remove particulates from the injector nozzles and retore an even spray pattern. The difference will be audible. The ultimate for your engine would be soybean-derived biodiesel. Support our American farmers, reduce our dependence on foreign oil AND increase your engines longevity. Tons of info at www.biodiesel.org or learn how to make your own fuel from waste at www.greasecar.com

Bad news: Didnt go off as planned. :(
I made plans 2 weeks ago to go this weekend to pick it up. My friend who is also mechanically inclined was supposed to come out with me, and we were going to drive out together and drive back tandem... He asked for the weekend off from work and instead his request somehow (sarcastic) got misinterpreted to mean he wanted to work all weekend....
SO my wife had to come instead. DOnt get me wrong, I like her and all, but shes not much help for replacing an injector pump along side a freeway or something like that should it become necessary.... plus, she had weekend plans she had to forego....
So thrursday night, the night before the trip, the right rear tire goes flat in the middle of the night.... So, I m running around trying to get it fixed. I did (ran over a nail) but, the tire is bulging in the spot it was repaired.... Well, I figure that since i have full size spare, I 'll have the bulged tire mounted as my spare until the guy can order me a new set of Nokian all seasons for next week...
OK, so tire fixed.... oil changed, all filters changed....
we leave 4 hours late. Have to take the dog since the kennel cannot take her.... We're driving the VW Bora (jetta) TDI since the land cruiser is in pieces in the garage (awaiting it s diesel conversion), and the Volvo is being borrowed....
We get halfway to Chicago (about 30 mins) when it starts.... But, Chicago is actually OK... the plows are out, and it seems ok.... till we get to indiana. By then there s a good 4 inches on the tollway, and getting worse-- no plows. Cars all in the ditch... I'm driving 50 at the most, but spend most of my time between 35 and 40.... 18 Wheelers are passing at 70+ with 4-6 inches of snow on the gound and visibility < 100 feet....
the whole trip to philly was supposed to take 15 hours... It took me 13 hours to get to Toledo, OH, which is a measly 200 miles from Chicago!!!!! we got there at around 9 in the morning saturday.... by that time it was white out conditions. We got on the mobile phones to find a hotel that would take us with a dog. MOtel 6 says sure, we take dogs under 80 pounds..... Damn, I have a 120 pound great dane..... anyway, we beg and plea, and they take us in under "extenuating circumstances" i.e.: Being stranded in a blizzard.
We stayed for 24 hours... only 10 channels of cable. Nowhere to go... Unsafe to go there even if there was someplace to go..... Had pizza delivered, went to bed.
Got lots of rest.... woke up at 8:30 on sunday. Went out to walk the dog and warm up the car.... Diesel fuel is gelled, despite the additive i put in it. Used Diesel 911 and lots of cranking to get it fired up finally.... Since then, the Check engine light is on.... DOnt know why, I dont think it s anything to worry about, probably a code in the system from starting so cold.... just get it cleared out of the computer when i get home. No problem....
On the road back to wisconsin. called the guy in Philly and told him i spent 13 hours driving thru the weather he has right now, and wont be making it this weekend.... He understands and agrees that we should try again next weekend or something.
on the road.... The dog gets real antsy.... Well, I figured something was amiss when she wouldnt go the bathroom in the parking lot of the hotel for almost 24 hours... as though she s too good to go at a Motel 6. the dog was not impressed by our choice of lodgings, but still..... anyway, I decide to stop and let her out... right in time.... dog is no sooner out of the car when all hell breaks loose... 24 hours of pent up..... you know, crap. what a mess.... at least none of it got in the car.... but how to wash her off???? dammit..... OK, solution found, her metal drinking water dish on top of the engine to warm the water, and some shampoo (the wife's herbal essences stuff) wash the dog, get her in the car before the water freezes..... great. on the road again...
Get to a toll booth (the last on on the Ohio turnpike before you get to Indiana) pay the toll, pull away, massive shimmying on the front tire.... Threw a weight!!!!! Cant drive over 40 MPH yet again!!!! back to the mobile phone.... found a Wal Mart Super Center in Angola Indiana 14 Miles off the Toll way.... they will do the tire.... went there.... they made us wait almost 2 hours... they did not have a torque wrench, and i explained i did not want them using an impact wrench on my car as I like my rotor s not being warped... they insisted it was the only "safe" way to do it..... "fine, do it" I told them. "But if I get warped rotors, dont let the Wisconsin plates fool you, I will come back here and make you buy me new ones -- Volkswagen originals nonetheless..."
Finally got going.... ate, bought more diesel....
got home at 6:30. yet again, a trip that should have taken 4 hours took almost twice as long...
we did get home to discover that the city, for some reason used the snowblower on our sidewalk (depth of the snow maybe-- dont want someone dying of heart attack?) and things were pretty much as we left them. THe dog is happy to be home again and seems regular... and I need to get the check engine light on the TDI looked at... and new tires next week...but other than that.... who am i kidding.... it was a friggin' nightmare!
