A/C Belt and PS 200

So my mechanic rigged the belts so my 88 240 wagon does not have A/C now but the good news is that it is not smelling like burning rubber. He did tell me that it would be really expensive to put the A/C back in as I would need a new unit b/c they do not make the old ones anymore for this car? Does anyone have any information about this?

From 76-84 the 240, if equipped with AC, came with a York compressor; FYI they still make these. However, the A/C compressor is a typical diesel kiki style compressor on a 1988. Of course they still make them. They are on all 240's from 1985 until 1993, 740/760's from 85 to 92, and 940's from 91-93. The 94 and 95's differ in the manifold where it's kinda v'd instead of straight up and down.

If the compressor locked up, you will have to replace the expansion valve, as well as the drier and the compressor. The cost here would be in the neighborhood of $650.00-$700.00, but you could do all the labor; just get the system vacuumed, replace the components, then get the system vacuumed and charged (if you retrofit to R134S, which I suggest doing, you can even charge it yourself if you get the kit).

Hope this helps,

Chris

I believe the ac compressor is a 6 cylinder diesel kiki. look for the last several numbers & letters as 15BH.

find one off a 240, 740 pick & pull. try to find one that is completely connected from a recent running volvo. look at the vehicle registration or inspection sticker when it was last driven.

also, cut the belts off and turn the pulley--it should turn freely without any bearing noise. then turn the clutch to see if it will turn.

after you remove it, and it can be tricky, turn the clutch again and listen. it should sound like a pumping sound. make sure to keep dirt out of the suction & discharge hose connections.

the best way to remove the a/c compr from the 240 is from underneath. i believe the 740 ac is more accessable from the top.

the most ideal ac compr is one that exhausts some pressure in the system when you disconnect the hoses.

my junkyard charges me about $80-90 for the thing, a little high.

do not use/buy a compressor if
1) the pulley bearings are bad or the clutch is really hard to turn or doesn's at all,
2) the a/c system has been open for a long time (moisture, rust, bugs, etc)

while you have it--might as well convert to r134, a doable 2-day job. installation instructions can be found on dave shannon's website in quick index
http://www.homestead.com/volvo2/quickindex.html

follow installation instructions on r134 zip file, near the bottom.

get the volvo kit from ebay, fcpgroton.com (exc prices) or a cheap volvo dealership: borton volvo is often mentioned.

kit priced around $230-280.

all of the parts for this are a bit pricey - the hoses are very high pressure hoses so they always run higher than water hoses but the compressor is a standard york and the rest of the components are easily available

try FCPgroton or eeuroparts
