What Now? Cam and Crank mis-aligned 1800

So this extremely frustrating project of replacing the timing gears is almost wrapped up. I posted before about not having timing marks on the gears- by the responses i got i decided i needed to have my eyes checked out, but ive finally pulled off the gear and can actually inspect it and there are in fact no timing marks on it. In the whole process, the cam moved a significant distance. The gear is back on but the cam and crank shafts arnt matched any more. What do i have to do now? please, i am a complete amature at this- this is the first car i have ever worked on and my tutor is no longer available to help me- so as much as possible keep the terminology simple. Thank you for your patience. This board has been very helpful so far and i am deeply thankful.

    If you still have the old gear (s), or can borrow a set of OEM gears, place yours on top of them, with the key slot alligned precisely, and transfer the marks to your new gears.

    I believe Phil is right about the woodruff location... Thats still gonna be hard to get right though.

    But damn... I'd be really pissed if I got timing gears that didn't have timing marks. I'd take 'em back and demand a refund and get some OEM gears.

    Or look, look agian, and have someone else look and confirm that there are no marks. I've never heard of the like. Is it possible that you put the gears on backwards such htat the marks are on the back side?

      Yeah, ive never seen anything like this. There is a carved "out" and "4/6" on one side- and it makes sense for this side to be out. I have an oem gear now and there is a very clear mark on this one. As far as i know, this gear has never been changed but i really have no idea. I have even closed my eyes and ran my nails over it looking for any kind of dent, mark, punch..Anything and i still cant find anything. The gear has "resilex" printed in the back- maybe someone knows something about this?

        My cam gear had a saw cut in one notch between teeth. Very subtle.

        Actually, getting both shafts to index at 12 o'clock is not that difficult as the number of teeth make a mis-alignment very noticeable.
        Best way is to note that the bevel is approx 1 tooth wide so you set-up the cam shaft a little "cocked" to the side, slip on the gear and note how it all lines up before setting it home. That way you can extract it to try again if necessary.

    The correct alignment is when the woodruff keys (the inserts that the slots in the gear hubs slip over) on both crank and cam are straight up at the 12 o'clock position with the cam gear fully seated.

    Well, I do not know anything about 1800s, but, get a wooden dowel, put it into Cylinder #1, top of Piston, rotate crankshaft, until it is at top. Rotate camshaft, until #1 cylinder's valves (both valves) are closed. Rotate intermediate shaft, for Distributor, so the center of the Rotor points to the center of #1 terminal on the Distributor Cap. That should be 0 degrees Top Dead Center.
