Integrating volvo eq with aftermarket receiver 700 1990

I just started a long term restoration project for my 1990 740GL (193k+)covering everything mechanical, electrical and cosmetic (after I neglected it for a long time) and just put in a clarion cd receiver last week which I didn't like, so I took it out and replaced it with a sony cdx-r3000. My question is, has anyone been able to use the existing volvo eq's (I have the 7 band model) with any aftermarket radio- if so, how? Right now, I took out both the stock amp and eq, but if I can reuse the eq, that works for me. I have the standard 4 door speakers, plus I put 6x9's in the rear deck several years ago (took some serious deck metal cutting to make that work), but they are currently disconnected; the door speakers are connected to the speaker outs on the radio and I plan to power the rear decks with a separate amp from the radio preamp output.

Thanks for the comments and ideas, guys; I have a background in electronics, so pinning out the EQ connector is definitely doable and worth a shot. I didn't mind chopping the rear deck a little to fit the 6x9's since they're covered by the top board piece and I used the existing volvo speaker grilles.

You're going to have to "pin-out" the EQ to figure out what pins do what. Then I'm sure you could use it for your system. But you'll have to power everything with external amps -- because the EQ almost certainly works with line-level inputs and outputs.

It will be a bit more expense, but it will sound great, and the install will be very nice.

I really doubt if the stock EQ would work with an aftermarket head unit. They use a special pin connector that only matches up to the corresponding head unit. I want to find some replacement speakers for my 760 but I don't want to cut any metal. It seems like some 5 1/4" speakers should fit up into the back panel under the window. No doubt the 6X9s would sound better, but I don't want my car chopped up to make 'em fit.

    Cheers,
    Dave

I know that this might be a bit of a red herring!

I want to do something similar but i'll be buggered if I'm
sit down and find out what pin does what.

let me know if you have any sucess,

Does anybody know if Volvo(Alpine)ever produced a single CD
head unit for the 1986 to 1989 seven series that will fit in the
      same space where my CR-4221 currently is(1 and a 1/2 DIN)or a
multi CD stacker unit that will also have the head unit in the same place?

If there ever was, ould you please tell me what the model numbers are as
      I wish to get one.

if the cost of one outweighs the price of an aftermarket one (which I
predict will happen, but I could be wrong)I'll just go for the aftermarket
      option

      cheers!

You can always get 6x9 boxes. They might look weird in a sedan, but if you value sound over looks, it'd be worth it. Of course with a wagon they look fine sitting in the back.
