No overdrive - could use some diagnostic help.......... 200 1990

Hi Folks,

Could use your help. Car is a 90 240 with the AW70 tranny. Overdrive just stopped working with possible assist from its owner!! No problem until a couple of days ago.

Brief background info: A couple of days ago I jacked the car's front end in preparation for repairing a leaking tranny cooling hose. Since it was jacked, I decide it would be a good time to remove the tranny pan bolts and drain the tranny before cutting the cooling line and repairing it. Maybe a bad idea doing that....Got some ugly looking ATF out, buttoned it up and drove off. Tranny was fine except for no OD.

Based on reading through the archives, I have 4 theories:
1. With car jacked, ATF leaked on OD solonoid cap. It was a little wet there. Noticed some cracking there, but it appears okay otherwise. Cleaned it up.
2. Because of the angle, ATF gunked up the solonoid itself?
3. Solonoid wires shifted and then shorted due to being jacked up. Checked wire to solonoid on driver's side. No serious fraying, but looked like it had been repaired before as there was electrical tape there.
4. Drove car for about 3 miles afterwards with slightly low fluid level. Down maybe a quart and half.

This is what I have done so far:
1. Checked and changed fuse - okay
2. Checked relay - seems fine, clicks
3. Switch - light works, goes on and off - okay?
4. Just checked solonoid operation this morning - Nothing....

I've read through the 700/900 FAQ and the archives and it seems the next step should be to test the wires, but being a total electrical novice, I'm not sure how to proceed...

Do I check the passenger side of the tranny for frayed wires? Where do I check for fraying near the shifter (exact location)? Just bought a small continuity tester and a circuit tester. Do I also need a voltmeter? Where do I check the wires? At solonoid? Near shifter? What exactly am I looking for? If wires check out do I pull the solonoid next?

Any thoughts/ideas would be extremely helpful.

Thanks guys!!

Jim

Check for voltage at the solenoid. If you have 12v present and the solenoid does not click, replace it. If you do not have 12v present and the wire leaving the shifter housing has 12v, then change the wire. If you do not have 12v leaving the relay, replace the relay.
