charging problems. 1989 turbo 700 1989

car seems to change from not charing at all, to charing fairly well when driving. sometimes all that idiot lights come on. and I can feel the car start to die.

Just put new voltage regulator on, as well as brushs, still no change.

goes in spurts, sometimes after driving a bit, at highway speeds all seems fine.

then it seems to barely charge.

belt doesn't appear to be slipping at all.

Battery connections are tight.

Is the battery able to hold a charge? How old is it? You might want to check that also. Load tests are the best way to check - go to a good parts store.
Have you actually checked the voltage at the battery (while running and while engine of), at the alternator while running?

Thanks, I think I'll go have the battery tested tomorrow.

The problem seems to occur most the first ten minutes of driving. If I get going at a decent consisten clip. it seems to be charing at the middle of the gauge.

How are the grounding points on block/frame as well as alternator?

You can check voltage drop across those connection. Should be <.2vdc

The way the problem is intermittent sounds like a loose connection to me.

I can't think of anything in the alternator that would allow it to charge sometimes and not others. I'm certainly no expert though.

If you want to do this yourself, you'll need to get a hold of a multimeter. BTW, I am currently having (what I think) some battery drain problems. Here's a response from Dave Stevens ... scroll down to the generic part:
