240 tapping/engine failure 200 1984

Hi folks! Just developed a pretty serious issue:

My 240 (150k) and I were heading down the hwy yesterday when a mean tapping sound started coming out of the engine - not the usual valves-a-little-out-of-adjustment sound, rather more like my valves had been replaced by marbles. It came on quite suddenly. I pulled off at the closest exit and made it to the bottom of the ramp before the car died. I restarted it (a little slower to catch than usual) and it ran essentially normally, though perhaps a little louder than usual. Also, the temp guage was up about halfway between normal and redline, but dropped down to normal within a couple minutes. At idle it acts and sounds completely normal but does seem a little shakier than usual on acceleration.

Anyone have some thoughts? I've lately heard a bit of tap on uphill acceleration, figured my valves were out of adjustment. The oil light was never on and I changed my pump a few thousand miles ago just as a precaution. I'm not driving but the car does start, run and behave basically normally. So... what to check?

Thanks!

-Alex

Could the sound have been pre-ignition ie. rattling? The reason I ask is your temp gauge read high for a bit. Maybe your car stared overheating (stuck thermostat?) resulting in pinging.

If performance is now affected, maybe bad/destroyed spark plug?

I think it could be just an exhaust leak. When these cars leak at the manifold, it's a TACK TACK TACK sound, like a bad valve. The gaskets rust away and burn out. Often you can see a bit of the gasket metal sticking out around the flange. They may be quieter at idle because of less airflow- accelerating would be loudest, with the throttle open more.

Also, it's not at all uncommon for cars to spit water from the tailpipe- water vapor is a normal byproduct of combustion. If it's cool weather that forms condensation. Mine makes a puddle if left to warm up idling for a long period.

The other items may be just perception because you're hearing the noise and just being more aware of the engine. Or it could be a real effect due to the leak. Either way, try to rule that out before getting involved in major engine work.

Maybe so, but could that cause my car to die? And is it consistent with the fact that it ran normally once restarted?

I'll have a look, see if I can detect a leak....

      Cheers,
      Alex

Alex - My first thought is that myo had - or have - a sticking valve. In your situation I would pull the valve cover and check out the valvetrain. You may want to turn the crank to verify proper operation of all eight valves. Check the cam and followers for damage.

    Good luck.

Just started the beast and made another observation - it's tossing large droplets of water out the tailpipe. Checked the oil, which doesn't look like a chocolate milkshake, so water doesn't seem to be getting into the crankcase. Also, it isn't smoking like mad - though it is just a wee bit.

    ?!
