Cylinder head coolant passages plugged? 700 1990

I just pulled the head on my B230FT to replace a leaking head gasket. Notice as I'm cleaning up the head, that what I thought were coolant deposits clogging several passages, that these passages are filled with metal. I suspect this is how the head is built, but I sure would appreciate confirmation before I put it back on. Anyone been here before? Would sure appreciate any info.

Cylinder head coolant passages plugged? 700 1990

Been awhile since I had a head off but typically the head contains large openings used for core cleanout from the casting process. The gasket usually has smaller holes to meter the coolant flow and to bleed air entrapment, this prevents coolant flow from "short circuiting" by not distributing coolant to the rear cylinders.

Coolant flow is typically front to rear in the block with larger passages in the rear reversing the flow from rear to front exiting at the thermostat housing.

The metered passages are usually a little larger on the exhaust side since obviously more cooling is needed here.

I would place the new gasket on the block and I believe this will all make sense.

Some engine designs also have blank passages in the gasket to increase loading in that area.

Sent the head to the machine shop. Those were blank passages filled with metal from the casting process. Part of the re-surfacing was to aluminum weld those shallow and irregular passages before the final re-surfacing. I'm posting this as follow-up on my initial post. Thanks to all for the input.

Thanks for the information,Tom. The situation would seem to be "blank" passages for this head. What is in there is definately not corrosion debris, but metal with an irregular surface like from casting, and corrosion deposits on top of it. The gasket has cutouts for several of these filled passages, however, which is what is throwing me.
The gasket (engine has 280K) broke over #4 cylinder, and leaked to the outside as well as into #4 from the looks of things -- heavy deposits on the valves there. The head has never been off the engine. Figure its a case of old age with this head gasket. The car didn't overheat, and I don't see any warping of the head when I check with a metal straight-edge.
I'm going to put this head back on. Thanks again.

If coolant has leaked into a cylinder, the visual evidence is extreme cleanliness, not deposits.
Yes, there are blanked off passages around #1 cylinder; if the aluminum is rough, the coolant hasn't been changed often enough.
DO NOT re-install the head without resurfacing; the new head gasket will last a LOT longer (more than weeks).

I'm definately sending the head for re-surfacing and a valve job. Always have done this for other engines and have never had a problem afterwards. The large amount of deposits on cylinder #4 valves is something I've noticed before when changing the plugs. Don't know if this is unique to this engine, but I'm going to pull the injectors and send them out for service as well (maybe #4 injector is partially clogged). Definately appreciate your advice.

I would suggest before you put it back that you take the head to a machine shop specializing in cylinder head repair. Sounds like it is warped. If it's not too bad it can be resurfaced and reused. They can also clean out those blocked cooling passages which probably caused the problem. The same thing happened on my 740 but it was too far gone to be repaired. The head gasket let go between cylinders 1 and 2. You really need to replace that antifreeze every year or so to maintain corrosion protection.
