European glass lens 240 Cibie/Volvo headlights

I picked up a pair of these off of a junker 242. Got them, the mounting plates and the surrounds free; however, one of them (driver's side in front of the battery) has corrosion on the top of the light; and it's bad enough that the some water has gotten through and has begun to rust inside the bottom of the light bucket.

Anyone have any experience restoring these things? Is it possible to remove the lens (appears to just be siliconed into the housing), repair the bucket and have it re-chromed on the inside?

Wrong light Erling, these are your < 81, I bet and have no exterior clips or interior white mount clips. You can separate the lens from the housing by heating the unit in the oven and prying the parts apart carefully. I combined a fine housing (broken lens) with a good lens (rusty housing) to make one nice light.

More info! Would a heat gun take the place of the oven? What actually seals the lens to the housing? How did you put them back together? And how would I go about finding a replacement housing? Thanks - Michael

Heat gun might work well. It is sealled with a heavy caulk/sealer/putty. I used white silicone caulk to reassemble the halves. You can try to get a broken unit or pitted lens unit here (I might have one, depends on type) or from Europe. There are two types, the H4 and the H1/H1 and left and right differ obviously. Write:

Would like to contact you for more info - but there was no email address or link. Please email me - Michael Yount at myount@senndelaney.com. I'd like to use these, but I've confirmed with a Volvo lighting specialist that simply buying a new/good used driver's side unit will be preferable to trying to restore this one - the damage to the reflector is simply too severe.

These units have two bulbs in them - one above the other. I'm assuming that's the descripion H1/H1? Is it one bulb for low beam, and another for high then?

The original lamps (post-1981 Euro cars) consist of thre parts; glass, housing and reflector. The reflector is fixed to the housing with three white plastic clips, and the glass is fixed to the housing with several metal clips (one doubles as a wiper stop).

The metal clips can be just pried off with a screwdriver. There is a plastic(/foam) gasket between glass and housing. Now you have access to the reflector. Twist the white plastic clips 90 deg to unlock - but have new ones ready, usually the old ones tend to break - and the reflector is free.

As for repairing the reflector; over here I would just get a new or used one. Re-chroming sounds expensive, but I might be wrong.

    Erling.

Problem is, we're not 'over there' and finding another housing is very hard to do over here - and they're usually pricey when you do - but perhaps that's cheaper than rehabilitating this one.

I'll have to look more closely at these - thanks for your comments. I don't see any of the plastic bits or metal clips you're talking about...hmmm....
