760 a/c compressor question 700

My '84 760 Turbo has the York model compressor on it. Should I consider switching it over to the compressors that the later 700's have? ( if this is possible) Is the York reciprocating compressor a good one?

My car also has automatic climate control that I'm having trouble with ( takes the heat forever to come on sometimes). Can I switch it to the 740 style manual controls?

Thanks,
Dave

Had the same car with the same temp. gauge issue. I found that the little rotary thumb wheel would work much better if I ran it back and forth between the limits to clean the contacts inside. As far as the sompressor goes, I believe you'd have to change the bracket upon which the compressor mounts, which would also affect the power steering pump, which is in the place that is occupied by the alternators on the '85-up models. But there's nothing wrong with York one-lingers, as they are used today on big trucks. Best bet is to look for one at a salvage yard (assuming you'd pay 10-20 USD, no more. Drain out the old oil and retrofit to r-134A. You'll definitely have to replace the receiver-drier on the firewall; buy the Volvo kit for like $100. As far as replacing the controller, I don't know for sure, but suspect that it would be almost impossible, as the plenums and controllers are different. Good luck (and Happy New Year)!

Steve

Don't know about the ac compressor but if your engine temp is also slow to come up then its probably a broken thermostat. You may find that it's physically broken and can't seal off the engine block from the radiator. Partially blocking the radiator w/ some cardboard may help get things warmer quicker.

I just changed the thermostat with an OE one from Volvo. Yeah, the engine is still slow to warm up. Even in warmer weather this car still only shows up 1/4 of the way up on the temp gauge. The sender and gauge are also new.
