IAC Valve cleanning 900

I have read here about cleanning the IAC Valve with Carburator cleanner. Can someone explain the best way to do it. Do I spry directly in the IAC valve? Would the electrical components be damaged by the solvent? Thanks

    Dear volvofever,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. To Mike's good advice, I venture to add that you can use cotton tipped swabs, so long as you flush out any cotton fibers, that may cling to the inner surfaces. You can also used pipe cleaners, to get to areas, that the swabs cannot. The solvent will not damage the electrical connections, even if it were to get on them, as the motor is sealed. The electrical contacts are at the other end of the motor, from where you'll be working.

You remove the motor - which is mounted on a bracket beside the intake manifold (on the driver's side of the engine bay [US/Canada] models) - by removing two 10mm hex bolts, the electrical connector (press to release), and two hoses (loosen clamps completely and pull-off the hoses).

    Hope this helps.

Best Wishes for a Good, Healthy New Year!!

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

To do a thorough cleaning I take the IAC motor off the car. I spray carb cleaner inside one of the side openings while keeping my thumb over the other open side. I shake it up and dump it out. Repeat on both sides until it comes out clean. When you look inside you will see a rotating "door" that slides to cover or uncover the opening. I also move it to both the open and closed positions to clean it--use something that won't scratch the valve to move it (I use one of those wooden barbecue skewers). The actual electronics don't actually get cleaned, although the motor contacts do. All in all its a pretty easy job, the worst part is taking it off the car and putting it back on.

If you are having rough idle problems you should also clean the throttle body if you haven't already done so. See the FAQs for guidance:

Hope this helps. Happy New Year!

    Mike
