89 740GL wagon radio 700

Does my car have an amp that has to be removed to install and aftermarket CD player?

I have an '87 745GLE with stock radio (TD6141). I know that it has one amp. I believe it's located in the driver side kickwell. It may have second one. Check the FAQs. Goodluck!

When you slide the radio out enough to see the back side, look for a round black cable plugged into the "amp" connection with a round 6-pin plug. If you got one of those, you got at least one external amp. If you have more than 2 speaker, you may have an amp, depending on which radio head unit you have. some of the head units ran only two speakers ( dash, or front doors, usually), off the head unit, and any additional speaker pairs from eithr a 2-channel or a 4-channel amp.

If there's an external amp, you'll be disconnecting the amp cable from your old unit, and not re-connecting it ( assuming you are talking about substituting a non-Volvo head unit with an internal amp).
You'll have to locate the speaker wires and disconnect at least two sets of them from the amp;connect them to your aftermarket head unit.
See if you can get wiring diagrams for your car, so you can find the connections and rely on the wire colors and locations in wiring it up.
Also use the search function at the lower right of the page--somebody else may have posted the info you need.

my car is a wagon and has four speakers, one in each door. so there will be an amp? I am looking to get a non-volvo head unit(maybe pioneer, sony, or JVC)

        1. pull out the radio and look for an amp cable at the rear of the radio; or
        2. use the search function to look for posts on your specific Volvo radio model, and see if there is a discussion about how many channels it ran from the head unit and what kinds of amps might have been involved. For example, if the model number on the front of your radio says "CR 718", then use that model number as a search criterion. Some of the radios of that era ran only two channels from the head unit; some ran 4. Most could accommodate external amps, but they were not mandatory or universal in size and location.

my 245 just had an amp in its "radio". Pull out the radio and it should have all the connectors to put in an aftermarket device, but I don't know if there is an external amplifier. It seems unlikely.
