Late model tail light assembly conversion

I've got an 82 242 - picked up a set of the - what is it - 7 panel tail lights from a newer 240 this weekend. They appear like they'll bolt right on -- but I don't know about the electrical. Will the plug from my stock tailights plug into the later model units and illuminate the correct bulbs? Or will I have to splice/wire up the plugs that came with the new units?

Well the verdict is in - they definitely will NOT bolt onto mine without cutting a bigger hole on the inside (nearer the license plate) of each side - but at least I know now. They came off of an 83 turbo 242; mine's an 82 242DL. Oh well - another set to ebay. Thanks for the replies guys.

I had a 1980 244 GL and I changed the tailights using a nice used set from an 86 240. They bolted right up--worked fine. I was under the understanding that as long as both side-pass and drivers side were the same vintage--they would work as 85 and earlier used a different ciruit board then the 86 and up and as long as both sides have the same curuit board-they work. Good luck

Not a bolt-on. The holes for your existing 5-panel lights are smaller than the 6's. Not so hard to change, though, go back to the yard and make a template for cutting.

Yikes! Probably not worth it then; perhaps I'll just sell them. What about the wiring connection?

The method by which the connector attaches to the tail light circuit board is probably the same.

However, what wire connects to what line on the circuit board and illuminates what light is probably way different.

Making a 6-panel light fit a 5-panel hole is rather a mess. Cruise eBay for more 5-panel lights. Those I have seen are often offerred by a seller who has not much Volvo savvy. Could get at a lice price.

        Good Luck,

        Bob

The lights on mine already are in pretty good shape - no need to replace them. Simply thought I would put these 6 panels on because these were available to me free and in great shape. But I'm not going to cut the body or harness just to put them on.

Although - mixed messages on the board - another poster said lights from an 86 bolted right on his 80. Go figure.
