windshield wiper relay questions...please help 900

**UPDATE****UPDATE****UPDATE****UPDATE****UPDATE****UPDATE****UPDATE****UPDATE*
I JUST WENT OUTSIDE AGAIN TO RUN AN EXPERIMENT. I PUT BACK THE OLD FUEL PUMP RELAY, AND THE ENTIRE WIPER SYSTEM WORKS FINE...INTERMITTENT, REGULAR, AND SUPER FAST. the new relay i put in in place of the old one, i got from volvo, and it had a sort of extra tab of plastic on the plug side and it would not plug in. it was identical from the outside as the old one, so i just popped off that tab, and plugged it in. but with the new relay, i cant wash window, and w/w do not work properly.
i am very confused

original post:

so, as previously posted, the problem that Molly has now is that her windshield wipers do not operate properly in the intermitent position, and whenin the regular speed position, the wipers will stop whenever you turn the wipers off...they do not come back down. when i pull the stalk to me to wash the windshield, it makes a sound and pops the fuse. the sound is like the ufo's in the cartoons when they dissappear into a galactic black hole or something....like "yeeooooop!".

in the FAQ, it states that the winshield wiper relay (from here on referred to as w/w relay) is in the back row of relays in the third position from left...i thought that was the location of the Fuel Pump Relay! now im afraid i switched the wrong relay for an improper one.

SO THE LONG SHORT OF IT IS:
what is the location of the w/w relay on a 940
what is the location of a fuel pump relay on a 940

please help

Look in the FAQ's for a diagram

my relay panel is similar looking to the one in the photo, but its dirrerent.
the fuel pump relay is positioned just right of the blue relay in the picture, not in the place that points out fuel pump.

also aren't relays made to fit only in one place so you cannot accidentally plug them into another slot?

It sounds as if you are switching the wrong relays around, but the relays have plastic keys on them to keep you from plugging them into the wrong socket. The FI relay (2 relays in one box, one for FI and one for pumps) is on the second tier closest to the driver (first on left).

well, i took the covers off both relays, and discovered that internally they are different. the old one has what looks like a little coil on one side and circuitry on the other side, and the new one has two coils: one one each side. so im figuring that the volvo parts guy gave me the wrong one fuel pump relay. the old relay is back in its place. my relay panel does not have the fuel pump relay in the position you say, rjk. the fuel pump relay in mine seems to be in the row closest to the firewall, 3 slots from the driver side.
my intermittent wiper relay is in the row furthest away from the firewall, and in the center...i can feel it click when i placed my hand on it with the intermittent function on (having installed the old fuel pump relay for the intermittent wiper to work).

i am really baffeled by this situation:
car did not start and it was a cold morning, replaced crank sensor and it did not start the noight i replaced it. the next day (37 deg F) it started. i replaced what i thought was the fuel pump relay for what i think was the wrong one from volvo, and the wipers started acting up. now with the old fuel pump relay back in the car seems to run fine, and all wiper functions are fine.
...and i still dont know why the car did not start to begin with. was it cold? crank sensor? faulty fuel pump sensor? low tide?

Do not go by the external appearance of the relays for replacement or ID purposes. It will only get you into trouble. Go by the relay diagram.

I have had instances where the relay was OK but there was a poor connection between the relay and the socket connectors (melted a headlight relay socket once). Perhaps when you were pulling and pushing the relays around, a poor connection got better. Just be aware the relay sockets and relays are a weak point in this vintage Volvo's electrics and check there first before spending any $$$.

so i think i have discovered the issue.
the dealer gave me the wrong fuel pump relay. when it gets cold, the car cranks but does not run. when i put in the other relay, it starts right up. ive done this everymorning at around 7 as an experiment....i hope its that!
