seat heater question 200

I'm sure this is on the archives, but right now the search engine doesn't seem to be working.

I just rebuilt the foam and such on my front seats (thanks to the 3M 77 adhesive tip and a couple of old fishing T-shirts), swapping left-right, etc., and machine washing my cloth upholstery. I straightened out the seat heater wiring with some duct tape and glued a piece of cloth over the heater grids so I wouldn't feel the hard plastic grid underneath me.

So now they're back in the car and feel wonderful, like new really. But the seat heaters still don't work (never have). I noticed that they have a few different connectors. There is the two-prong connector that gets connected to the wiring coming from under the carpet. That was what was hooked up when I took the seats out. Then I noticed that there is a black wire and a red wire coming from the bottom grid and the seat back grid, respectively. One is female and one is male. When I took the seats out none of these connectors on either side was hooked up to anything. Has that been my problem all along? It seems pretty clear that in order for the system to work, they need to be connected to one another (or something else), but I hesitate because it's sort of counter-intuitive to hook up a red wire with a black one. Are these two wires supposed to be connected to one another?

Also remember that the seat heaters won't come on if the ambient temp is above 60 degrees f.

    Just a thought...

The wire colors make no difference, but they are usually the same color. Plus/negative makes no difference with the heaters, they are wired in series with each other. So they should be connected. If you have a seat heater without the on/off switch between the seats you will have trouble feeling it even if the heater is working. They don't get very hot, particularly if you put an extra cloth over them. The thermostat will read the cloth so it will get warm and thats about it.
You can check your heater with a multi-testor. If you unplug the connecter to the floor you can check the heater. You should get almost no resistance if you measure across the unplugged heater leads. If you get high resistance you have a broken heater wire or defective themostat.

    On mine they are.
To make sure we're talking about the same cables: they do have a cilinder shaped milky-white plasctic connector, don't they?
Besides if I recall correctly it's quite obvious they are made to clamp on each other.

Hope this solves your heater problem.
