1992 240 possible purchase...140K, No rust...typical price? 200

This is a post I am making for "Maxspeed" as he is having problems connecting to the site:

"I just found a 92 244 Automatic, black on black, no rust, no dents or scratches, 140k miles, nice interior, complete records on the car, guy wants $2500. for it but i talked him down to $1200.00. I need to know if that is too high to pay for a 1992? And yes it is in almost perfect shape except for the tires which show some wear on the outside, Tie rods I guess..And the wheels are a honeycomb type mag with Volvo on the center caps..Not like my Virgos but more like an old Trans Am type wheel.. 15 inch and real nice looking."

Thanks guys,
Adam

Sounds like a great find!

Buy this car, drive it to Maine and sell it for $10,000 US dollars. I'm not kidding. You could get more, but at this time of year it's not worth staying around the area for more than a day. Especially if you are sensitve to cold or have some sort of phobia about snow flurries.

Cruised eBay Monday, for reference. That price is a good one, if the features all work and the bad stuff is as listed and there's no more.

Front tires wear on the inner tread when tie rod ends go out, IIRC. Get a quote on front end tie rods, ends, boots, ball joints, alignment.

check for re-painting after a wreck, especially front end. Where the front fenders bend down to be under the hood, check for a lip where the masking tape edge was. Look also for a lip along the inner edges of the doors, and along the top of the windshield seal.

Measure some diagonals in the engine bay. Be very exact. Choose a point on the left end of the front panel, a bolt head maybe, and a point on the right end of the firewall. That's one diagonal, check both. Should be close to equal.

    Wheels sound great.

Hope Maxspeed's computer gets well soon.

    Regards,

    Bob

    Location, Location, Location ... 200

Around here in SoCal, $2500 gets one that looks mostly decent and has a few "minor" issues that a DIY-er can easily resolve for an afternoon and a hundred or so in parts.

For one in the condition you describe, it's more about $4k ... but again, this is SoCal, not Boston (per your profile). Such said, even factoring in the difference of car values accross the country, I'd definitely go for it at $1200.
