Hello there.
I bought a 1990 240 not long ago and after driving on the freeway I realized that it wasn't shifting to the 4th. So I followed some of the recommendations that I could find in this forum:
1) The OD solenoid seems to be working fine as I can hear it click when I cyclically depress the OD switch. It could be clogged but I daren't venture checking whether it's clogged or not. So I did the next thing...
2) Checked the kickdown cable. The kickdown cable that's on my 240 doesn't have a cable crimp as shown in the Bently, is that normal for the late 240's? The cable crimp doesn't seem to be serving any purpose since, at idle, it is sitting at most 1mm from the cable sheath, or does it? My guess is that it's there to allow the cable sheath to push against it so as to create slack in the kickdown cable. With the cable crimp, doesn't it cause the red cable sheath cover to become dislodged from the cable sheath when the accelerator is fully depressed?
So anyway, I think I have digressed and so my problem remains unsolved. Do you think I can solve my problem by putting a cable crimp and adjust the cable sheath to get more slack so that the transmission can shift to the 4th?
Any suggestions? Thanks.
