starts, but will not advance 200 1984

I have a 1984 240 sedan. I had it towed to the repair shop because it will not move. You can start it, but it doesn't have enough power to move at all. It's getting fuel, the distributor is fine, it starts ok. He says it's an electronic problem, but he cannot find it. this car is 20 years old and it seems like purchasing a new wiring harness is not worth the expense. Would this solve my problem anyway? Has anyone ever heard of this problem? Do you have any suggestions? He's had it for a week and can't figure it out. I'm ready to take it home and rip into it myself. Help! JWW

First, I'd confirm good fuel flow to the injectors by disconnecting the fuel hose from the fuel rail pipe and crank it over with the open end of the hose in a small jar. If the jar fills half up in 15-30 seconds it is probably not a fuel supply problem. Next, I'd install a new distributor cap and rotor and spark plugs. Since the engine runs, the "no power" condition is probably not caused by the wiring harness. As a check, run a jumper wire from the positive battery post to terminal 15 on the coil and crank it over. The spark plug wires and air mass meter would be the next suspects. Post back when your done with these checks if the problem persist. jp

    A few questions:

    Is it an automatic?

Does it idle fine but refuse to rev up?

Wiring problems may not be the cause.

Yes, it is an automatic. It does idle though roughly, and will not rev up to move it.

It doesn't sound like an electrical issue to me, but I guess it's possible. Good luck! Hope your mechanic figures it out soon!

Have you ruled out the air mass meter as the source of your problem?

I'm thinking that the air mass flow meter would still let it accelerate enough to move. Similarly, a coil that is not saturating at any RPM above idle can really slow you down, but it should move. An engine that won't rev up enough to move sounds like an obstructed exhaust or a slipped timing belt.

Hold you hand at the exhaust outlet as it idles. If you can feel the individual puffs of exhaust, the exhaust is OK.

Corrosion in the primary circuit wiring would be the most likely cause of a coil that won't saturate quickly, but that problem would probably come on slowly, first noticed as a misfire at high RPMs.

Has the mechanic checked the timing belt?

If the problem is the air mass meter, you can check it by simply disconnecting the wire plug leading to it (found on the large plastic tube behind the drivers side headlight. Doing this will cause the ECU to go into a "limp home" mode, where the engine runs a little roughly and wouldn't pass smog, but should run. Good luck!

                Still need help!!
Everything checks out ok: fuel flow, spark, air mass meter, computers.
Could it be a tank full of bad gasoline?
This is a smart guy an dhe does not know what else to try.
                anyone have more suggestions?
