Is My A/C relay bad? or Is it the Control Board 900

I've got an intermittent A/C in my 93 944 NA. This model has the "A/C Off" type of on/off switch. I have done my detective work and have deduced that either the relay or the control board are bad. 1st, is there even a A/C relay in this car. It's not behind the glove box like in a 740 nor is it behind the center dash as in a 240. The FAQs point to a possible bad solder on the control board. How do I get to the control board? Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Luke

Try this thread on Page 2 it gives detailed info further to my earlier response. I had a cracked board but it looks as if others have trouble with relay mounting

Screw Pulling the AC controller, gentlemen -- why not just run an AC bypass switch? your thoughts? 𖛼]

I ran my with my low pressure switch by-passed for a couple of weeks, until I got a third non-Volvo switch that worked. I would have left it like that, but I'm going to sell the car and didn't want to sell it not the way it should be.

I wish you were close by, then I could have your control module on my kitchen table in less than ten min's. I have had mine out several times in the past few weeks chasing an A/C ghost.

REmove the plastic panel covering the ignition switch and around the control panel. be carefull, because the plastic part is thin on three sides around the control panel. This will expose the contral panel and the four black screws that hold it in. Remove them. You will find that the bottom of the control board is still held in by two little brackest on the bottom. They are stout little suckers, but you can bend them down with a flat blade screw driver. Go ahead. Mine have been bent down and up 7-8 times and they are still ok.

This will allow you to remove the control module without removing the entire console from the bottom up. You will have to disconnect vaccuum lines, and wire harness to remove the module.

The relay for the A/C in on the control board. It is these solder joints that brake. Take your time taking the black cover off to expose the "guts" of the module. The broken joint shouldn't be to hard to identify.

Good luck,
Chris

I also have had this prob. The board is behind the heater controls so involves dismatling the centre of the dash (start at the bottom and work your way up) I cant remember where on the board the break was, but fount it easily enough with a magnifying glass. Bridgeing the gap by soldering a wire to either end of the gap, where the wires on the board allow room was easy and allows flex. That was 2+ years ago and all is well. hope this helps

Great responses! The by-pass question on pg 2 was especially enlightening. After reading all the responses, it looks like my Sunday project it set. I'll be removing and soldering a circuit board. Hope it works!!

Thanks to all! Spook's great detailed instructions on removing the center panel and resoldering needs to be on the FAQs!!

Update on Control Board 900

To all who provided advice, THANK-YOU. I pulled the control board and sure enough, found a bad solder point. I resolder it and presto! I am back into cool A/C once again. Brickboard is the greatest!!
