how to set the timing on 91 200

I have a timing light but have never used it. I know about hooking up to battery and hooking the other clip to #1 plug wire and I know how to adujust the distributer. I know where the timing mark is on the plastic cover above the crankshaft pulley and with my 230 engine it says to put it at 12 degrees+-4 degrees at 750rpm. That is what is says in my repair book. Do I put a white mark on the pulley just below the 12 degree mark and then as it spins adjust the distributer until the light blinks right with the dot I put on the pulley. I am just a bit confused on that part of it. Help would be much appreciated.

You don't, on '89 and later it's set by the ignition computer and can't be adjusted.

I tryed to set the timing manualy by making small adjustments to the distributer after changing the timing belt. Will the ignition computer override that and reset it or am I in trouble by moving the distributer.

      thanks lenny

The timing is set by a sensor on the belhousing that reads "teeth" on the flwheel. As long as the distributor is not moved too far for the spark to jump from the rotor to the lead terminal it will make no difference. I'd try to get it back as close as possible to where it was to shorten the spark's path however, it should be fairly easy to see a clean spot where the flange the bolt goes though was.

Turn the crank to TDC (#1 compression). The rotor should point over a small notch on the distributor housing - around the 8 o'clock position (when viewed from the front of the car leaning over the rad) if I remember correctly. If the rotor is closer to 2 o'clock turn the crank to the "other" TDC. And put away that shiny new timing light. =)
