Turbo charger issues on an 85 740 700 1985

Hello,

I just acquired an 85 740 with a B230FT engine. The guy I got the car from says that under load the charger draws oil into the motor, thus causing it to smoke. When idling, there is no visible smoke, only after the car is in motion, and give it some gas. I have no experience with turbo chargers. What does this sound like to you?

not to rain on your parade...but i have the same issue, im 3 YEARS in and several $1000...and no change i have had new turbos, new exhausts you name it..it just uses huge amounts of oil and smokes under load (or high vacume) no smoke at idle...

if i knew then what i know now no way wouold i have bought a turbo, or i would have just sold it rather than spend the money......

sorry but if you get this on b230 everyone has ideas but no one seems to know...

right now i am linning up to take it into a very expensive shop that builds racing engines (aka casts blocks....etc) for histyoric cars as they have an endoscope and can find out whats happening in the engine without crackin it...thye say unless they can see anything cheapest thing will probably be just to sell the car and go buy something else

There is a drain on the bottom of the intercooler,(drivers side) it may have substantial accumulation. Easy to remove the whole unit and flush it out with mineral spirits.
If you have alot of blowby that could explain it since the crankcase vapors are drawn into the air inlet just ahead of the turbo.
There is also a small line that draws vapors back into the manifold during normal operation. (no boost)
The brass fitting may be plugged with oxidized oil.

Agree with Volvo steel.

There is a heap of info in the FAQ on turbos.

You could remove the hose from outlet of turbo and look at the amount of oil in the hose (I'd suspect a lot if what previous owner said was true).

You could also check the impeller bearings too (as per FAQ) by removing AMM to turbo hose.

sounds like oil is leaking into the turbo, your probly going to have to get it rebuilt.
