940 turbo waterpump 900 1991

I am currently in the process of replacing my water pump. Do we reuse the 4 stud screws that attaches the fan to the water pump or are they available somewhere and at what price. I find it difficult to remove them from the old pump and the new one does not have them included. Thanks.

I found the M6.0x1.0 from Ace Hardware in southern California @ $2 each. I did remember to loosen the nuts holding the fan on BEFORE loosening the belt. The slotted holes and having to push the pump up during installation is a very important point that needs to be included in the FAQs I think. Now I have to repair two stress cracks in my expansion tank.

Thank you everyone for your input.

Good topic, either tomorrow or Tuesday I will be receiving a new water pump to put on my '93 945T (and a bunch of other stuff too).

As for the 4 studs, you can buy them from IPD:

The studs are $1 each and the nuts are $0.80 each. Shipping, if I remember right (per my telephone conversation with them two days ago) was $3.

Overall, how's the project going? Any suprises when you were taking it off or putting it back on? Also, if you've never seen IPD's catalogs, call them up and request one, they are interesting to flip through.

I try to keep good notes when I do this stuff including all the things I should have done... Lets see, it says, “next time, break loose water pump pulley screws before removing fan belt”. I recall using a little PB B and tapping the end of the wrench when I loosened it.

With the water pump installation, if you have not put one in yet, prop up the pump with a stick from the ground and tighten all the all the screws equally, not just the screws in the slotted holes first.

You should be able to re-use the studs.

The best way to remove and refit them is to run two nuts down the threads on one stud at time, tighten the nuts together to lock them to each other and the stud.

You should then be able to unscrew the stud from the old pump using the lower nut.

You can replace the studs with M6x1.0 bolts.

Just make sure they are of the right length to prevent the threaded part going too far through the flange and hitting the pump body.

Colin.
