'90 760 turbo wagon gas mileage.... 700 1990

... prior to the turbo wagon, i had a 5 speed n/a 740 wagon w/ 250kmi. it got about 25 mpg locally and maybe 29 mpg highway...
.. my recently acquired 760 turbo wagon (4 cyl, 110kmi) gets 20 or 22 mpg locally, not sure about hiway mileage yet..
i was just wondering how owners of similar vehicles do mileage wise.

1991 745 Turbo - 18-22 around town, 26-27 on the highway if I don't boost it too much. Good luck.

That is normal mileage for your vehicle. My 87 745T when it had an auto got a little lower mileage around town. On the highway at 65 mph with the AC on and cruise it would pull around 26 to 26.5 mpg. Push it up into the 70 mph range mileage dropped to 24.5 to 25 mpg.

Flaps,

I would agree with the others. I have a 1989 765 Tic that is in good condition, everything works and in tune. I see about 22-23 in normal rural driving, maybe 24 and change on a long trip. If my foot gets to happy, I can drop the mileage down to 19, but I have to really beat on it.

Don't forget, depending on where you live, if they start adding oxygenating additives to the fuel (Nov. 1 is the usual start) for winter environmental reasons, you'll see about another 10% dropoff on your mileage. Alot of people forget about that and waste alot of time trying to find the problem when it's in the fuel.

HTH,

You should expect to get worse milage on a turbo under the same driving conditions since the turbo engine operates with a lower compression ratio which makes it less efficient thermodynamically. You do of course get more power when under boost but part throttle inefficiency is the price you pay for the power.
There is no free lunch !

Also:
760 has about 10% more weight
Automatic transmission
without lock-up torque converter.

It all adds up

Add to that the the rear end gearing is taller for the turbo models (to improve acceleration).

Try as I might I can't seem to get more than 24 highway in my '88 760T--but my highway trips (commute) involve climbing then descending about 1000 feet, some heavy traffic, and speeds about 75mph, conditions permitting. I suspect local mileage is terrible--probably fifteen or so, but I don't have the heart to calculate it for sure. It is, well, less than satisfying.
