Oil light 700

Someone help please. I have a 1990 turbo 740. My oil light starts to flicker on and off whenever the idle drops under 600 rpm. So I figured all I have to do is raise the idle and the problem would go away. I tried raising the idle but as everyone knows the computer decides where the idle should be. If anything by me trying to adjust the idle has made things worse cause the car at cold start-up idles all over the place. The motor was rebuilt less than 10,000 miles ago so I don't think it's the oil pump.(It might be) Can someone just give me some troubleshooting advice?

Thanks Pat

I had the exact same problem you are talking about and fixed it by doing two things. First, I ran AutoRX in my car (1991 745 turbo) and my idle went from about 550-600 to 600-750 (there is stuff on the web testifying to the fact that this happens with AutoRX). And then, after purchasing a new oil pump and oil delivery tube o-rings (another likely oil pressure culprit) and making the jig described in the FAQ's, I thought I would try that new oil pressure sender I had purchased from FCPGroton, and even though the sender in the car had been replaced a year previous, once I put the new sender in, now there is no oil pressure light flicker, and I am happy. Sent the oil pump and related parts back and so far so good. Good luck to ya!

It could be the sender is faulty. As was said, a mechanical guage temporarily replacing the sender will tell you if the pressure is really too low. The owner's manual for my 940, NA says that it is normal for the oil pressure light to flicker at idle after the engine is hot. As long as the light immediately goes out when the RPM starts to climb, the engine is OK. Mine does it only after a hard run on a hot day.

I suppose you could use a heavier oil.

Check it with a manual gauge, because the light comes on does not mean zero oil pressure. Minimum oil pressure as per Clevite's recommendation 6 psi at 600 rpm.
That's a general rule Volvo may be more specific. We know our bearings will live at 10# / 1000 rpm.

Aside from checking the oil pressure sensor and associated wiring, I guess my first stop would be the fellow who rebuilt the engine. Hopefully it is a quality rebuild; as such there would perhaps be some sort of warranty.
