91 940 SE Wagon 900

I'm considering purchasing a 91 945SE. It has 130200 miles. The dealer claims that it is a one owner trade and has all records. It was listed for 3 days on ebay week before last with a starting price of 4000.00. Well, the dealer wanted 4200, then 4000 and now is willing to settle for 3750.00. The pics look good as does the carfax report. This would be my first turbo (I've wanted one for 6 years!) and would replace my original brick ('89 245 with 191K miles) or my newest one (87 745 with 133K miles, depending on which one my 16yr older wants to drive).
I'll be traveling from El Paso, TX to Dallas to get the car and the dealer is willing to let me walk away if the car has been missrepresented. Anyone have any advice or tips? If you can think of some showstoppers let me know quick...I'm really drooling over this car!

Thanks!

If the car is in as good a shape as owner indicate I would pay the $3750 in a heart beat. I paid $4000 for my 940 SE at 116K. The car was in very good condition except for the broken antenna and non operating rear wiper. I fixed the rear wiper @ no cost and replaced the antenna for $21. The radiator had been replaced so I didn't have that to worry about.

I wanted to get the 940SE wagon because I needed a wagon,I like the body style and the ammenties offered in the 940SE. Also happen to have a 940SE sedan. I enjoy both.

    Still looking? 900

My neighbor is a used car dealer and he tells me about the Volvos he runs across. Yesterday he was telling about a customer who picked up a '96(?) Honda Accord and wanted to trade in a Volvo wagon. My neighbor wasn't interested in it because they aren't that popular around here (thus he would have trouble selling it) and he knew he wouldn't get enough out of it at auction.

All he knows is that it is burgundy in color, and is in great shape. He says it looks just like mine (a '93 945T), but it might be a 745 or a 945. The customer will be picking up the Honda on Monday and my neighbor will be giving me more information about the car, including the guy's name & telephone number. I'll post the information about it when I get it tomorrow. The car is in Springfield, Illinois.

Assuming it's in good shape mechanically speaking, you should be able to pick it up for less than the dealer is wanting for the '91. But again, I have no idea at this time how much the guy is asking, or even what exactly the car is.

Yes. Still interested. I'm in El Paso, TX. Do you have the name of the dealer? I can be reached at 915-568-5132 or 915-491-1272 during the day.

I'll give the dealer a call in a little bit, though today he was at an auction in Morton (near Peoria), he might not be back yet. If not, I'll just call you with his name and number, you can talk with the dealer tomorrow.

Remember that the dealer doesn't have the car, he wasn't interested in it since he knew that it most likely wouldn't sell on his lot and he couldn't sell it at auction for a profit, he would just be passing on the Volvo owner's name and number. The Volvo's owner just bought a used Honda Accord from him (the used car dealer) and was wanting to sell the Volvo.

          OK, got the information. 900

OK, got the information. It's not exactly a peach, but the price is good.

It's an '89 745 with 170,000 miles. Cloth seats (if I remember the dealer right, he talked with the owner's wife) and has a sunroof (moonroof?). The exterior is in great shape (per the dealer, who saw the car), but he (and I) have no idea how the interior is or how the engine is. If interested, the seller's last name is DiScala (dealer didn't remember his first name) and his number is 618/698-9141 (which is in Springfield, Illinois). The dealer's impression was that he would sell it for $1,000 or $1,200 or so (he didn't get a firm price since he spoke with the wife, the husband is the one selling the car). I don't think that its a turbo, but I'm not sure. I've personally not spoken with the seller.

I called you when I got the information, but you had already left for the day (it was a little after 5pm), I'll call back tomorrow morning in case you don't see this message.

Personally, I really like my 945T. If I were you I'd spend a little more for a newer 945T (newer than the '91 GLE, shoot for a '93 to '95 turbo). But if you are looking for a cheap Volvo wagon, this would be good.

    91 940 SE Wagon 900

Just remember that prices at used car dealers are *always* negotiable, especially if he's been reducing the price lately.

Have the dealer show you a Carfax report on the car, you want to make sure that it hasn't been in any major wrecks and doesn't have a salvaged title (a salvaged title would reduce it's value by half). If he doesn't want to run one for you, you can do it yourself for $20 or $25. Also check his claim that it only has one owner (just to check how honest the dealer is, if it has multiple owners then you should question the maintenance records also).

I'd find a 93 or 94 for that money. There are significant changes, particularly engine (oil cooled pistons), differential (although some say the locking diff is a negative), SIPS. BTY, I got my 945T on eBay for $2350 2 years ago, 162K, clean, but needed (only?)$800 to repair AC - do the math.

Thanks. I understand that 940SE's were only made in 91. It's a "bridge car" meant to fill the gap btw the 760 series and 960. I have been looking at eBay for quite some time (purchased my 745 on eBay last Dec) and have not seen any like this that are within reasonable distance to me (most are on the East Coast, so factor in shipping costs or air fare).

I paid $2900 for my one owner 94 944T (124k miles)yet would have went for more money if there weren't so many superficial scratches (NY car....). I personally think you can get what you what a little cheaper, however I tend to bargin very hard. If the car is really want you want and the money isn't that much of an issue, make yourself happy and buy it. I would suggest looking around more. Likewise, these things can be a very emotional purchase due to our high interest in Volvo's so inspect the car thoroughly so you don't overlook something and regret it later. Good luck, hope it works out.

      Hey guys,

Don't forget that wagons almost always command a premium price. It could easly make a '91 wagon worth as much or more then a '94 sedan with comparable mileage. I think the price sounds good if it's in good shape. Look though the info on buying a 700/900 in the FAQ before going to look at it. Maybe even print some important things off and take them along. Oh, sounds like you got an awesome deal on that 944T Padding, you'd be hard pressed to find a deal like that around here! Enjoy! Good luck Healedknee, I hope it turns out to be the Volvo you are dreaming of! :)
