Could Loose Belts Cause Intermittent Stalling 700 1991

Hello all.

All three of my belts are loose and have been squeling like pigs for the past week or so. I was going to wait until the next oil change to tighten them up, but I started to have intermittent stalling two days ago. My question to you all is could loose belts cause intermittent stalling? Please also note that the stalling occurs more frequently if the AC is on. If the AC is off then it occurs with less regularity.

PS. I stop driving the car yesterday, due to the stalling and unsafe condition it causes, and will be tightening the belts up later tonight. I will also check to see if the harmonic balancer is seperating. The car has relatively new, ie. under two year old, Fuel Pump Relay, RPM sensor, Ignition Power Stage, Harmonic Balancer.

If you've replaced your harmonic balancer 2 years ago you shouldn't have to worry about it. A loose belt(s) might result in overheating, problems with power-steering, charging and/or A/C. You dont mention how loose the belts are though...

Possibly, if voltage declines to the point your ignition stops firing. But in that case, you would not be able to restart the engine using the starter. Fix the belts, but start looking elsewhere for the stalling.

      Update,

Middle alternator belt was extremely loose. Almost 3/4 of inch of play in the middle of the belt when light pressure was applied to it. The other two belt were also loose about a 1/2 inch of play.

Inspected all three belts for cracks, frays, and anything else that may cause me to replace them. All were in fine shape, they were just loose. Used FAQ belt tightening procedures on Thursday night and test drove the car for about 30 minutes that night. No stalling, even with AC on, the entire time. Drove the car all day on Friday and no stalling, even with AC on.

PS. The belts were only 2 years old. The harmonic balancer was checked and was intact, ie. were not seperated. The write up on the belt tightening sequence/procedures in FAQ was excellent. I keep an eye on things and hopefully stalling problem will not come up again. Thanks for the responses and have a good day.
