Thanks to you all and a question about wagon antenna motor replacement 700

You are a great bunch of guys (and gals!) A word of thanks to all of the patient people who have helped me diagnose and repair the little gremlins in my 86 740T wagon with (now) 165K. The recent episode of crappy idle in the morning was located and found to be a faulty plug wire, even though I had changed them all about 4 months ago. Just happened to be messing around with the ignition coil wires a couple of nights ago, and pulled out some used wires I got in a deal on ebay a few months ago with a spare distributor cap, and had the thought to change out the plugwires, and sure enough it was a bad wire going to the number 1 cylinder. The crappy idle in the morning was about to drive me crazy. Well the morning air temperature was about 35 degrees today, and I rushed out to start my vehicle -- and it idled so smooth I could hardly tell the engine was on. What a joy on a Fall morning! All is right with the world again!

So, now ... my next project. I've replaced wiring harness, O2 sensor, distributor, cap, rotor, plug, plug wires (twice), sunroof motor, IAC valve, vacuum lines, cleaned flame trap, new front rotors, new fuel pump and filter, new fuel pressure regulator, replaced o-rings and fuel injectors, replaced turbo, valve cover gaskets, oil cap, and a couple of relays. When I purchased this car almost a year ago one of the first things I noticed was that the antenna motor (it's a wagon) didn't work. No big deal since the antenna itself was in the extended position and gets good reception, and I'm usually listening to CD or FM anyway. Well, now it's time to tackle that (at least I think). Heading to the boneyard this weekend to see if I can locate an antenna motor. Any suggestions on disassembling/reassembling it? Any special tools I will need? Any mounting hardware I should be mindful to take from the wrecker for good luck? Any wiring issues or cautions? Wish me luck!

is there a volvo radio in the car or aftermarket, if its been switched you should check to make sure whoever put the radio in hooked up the antenna, i had a problem when putting one in my wifes a few years back there was no connection on the radio for the antenna, i ended up wireing it into the Radio Hot On so when the radio was turned on the antenna came up same principle as the antenna wire.

Volvosteel, there is an aftermarket CD/cassette/FM radio. However when I first obtained this vehicle, there was the stock VOLVO cassette/AM/FM radio. It was falling apart, so I sent it to a install shop to have the new one put in. However the antenna did not work even when the stock radio was in it, and it was such a minor thing that I didn't pursue it. Now that I've gotten some of the major obstacles under control (or at least properly identified), figured it's time to look at the antenna. After that, the door on the right passenger rear that won't open, and I'll be home free -- until the next thing comes up.

Are you sure the motor is toast? If the mast is the problem, it can be replaced with a new one for about $25 and 5 minutes work. If the motor is making noise when you turn the radio on and off, I'd try the mast first.

Motor makes no sound at all when I toggle the switch on and off. I looked in there a little while ago and the wire connecting it to the harness seems to be connected properly. Unsnapped and resnapped it just to see, and of course it did nothing when I toggled the switch off/on.

I got the antenna from a newer car in my 85, and the wire connection was different in color and plug design. I did a little experimental wire splicing, and the new(er) one works geat now, but doing it again, id try to get the same plug. Before you replace it, check the ground wire and see if there is power to the red wire withthe radio on(maybe always?) Also it is possible that the problem lies in the switch on the dash (Y like icon)...

Easy removal and installation: a couple of bolts (one a little challenging to reach), the antenna tube, and it's out.

There's a yellowish plastic tube in there, looks like something that oughta be connected to a life support machine. What's that for?

Ha! Thanks Steve. I would have never guessed (until I dismantled the old one that is...).
