Have replaced shocks/struts, trailing arm and a few other bushings, new tires, stuffed foam in shift hole(that helped with cruising noise immensely)...BUT...

I think much of the remaining perception of ride discomfort comes from the sheer amount of noise produced when loose crap inside and out jumps up and down with every bump. For example, I know the glove box door is loose and is one of these things.

My question to the experienced (which I am not) is what are the biggest and most common culprits (like the glove box door) that flop around and make all the racket when the car jumps?

I think these things make it SEEM like the ride is much harsher than it actually is. A quiet car is tight inside and out, but I need to discover all the sources that must be secured to prevent movement--and thus noise.

    On my last 240, I found the worst culprit to be the ashtray. I used to take it out on long trips.

    I've had times when a small amount of body flex or just road shock has made the plastic panels in the dash make sort of a crackling noise. It can get loud. I reduced it greatly by squirting some Silicone lube along all the places where two plastic panels meet. Wipe off the excess and give it time to work in.

    Why is the glove box door loose? One of mine separated between the front a rear halves. I took the door off and reglued it using Gorilla glue (sparingly). If the whole box is loose, you can replace missing screws or, if the holes are stripped out, use slightly larger screws. I don't recall if the striker on the latch is adjustable or not.

    Our '88 240 has an additional sound reducing weather strip on the doors. It helps a lot. Our '86 didn't have this so it must have been added in '87 or '88. I think it can be retrofitted. If you don't have this, take a look at an '88 or later to see what I'm talking about.

      Very much appreciated...

      I had wondered about how to deal with the "crackling" noise as you call it. In fact, I didn't know what to call it. Will try the silicone.

      Also appreciate the glove box idea--mine is definitely loose in part because of having broken away from around one of the screws...will try the bigger screw idea...or maybe a washer to grab it.

      I must add that I made the biggest progress today... I got the tire and the rest of the items in the trunk secure...huge difference when hitting bumps. I thing another problem area is the whole back deck, where the speakers are mounted. Another previous suggestion had to do with speaker covers...I think it would be great to solidify that whole deck with some silicone caulk and perhaps an added layer underneath from the trunk.

      This is exciting, as I truly feel that the brick is becoming quieter and more luxurious with each small improvement.

        My son bought some kind of paper backed tar paper when he put a large sound system in the Volvo. I cut a piece for under the standard back shelf piece, and it worked pretty well.

    my speaker covers have tended to loosen and vibrate on the road

    as well as the rear wiper switch on wiper stalk at the steering wheel.

    I always find that tightening up the Spare tire and the jack is tough. The rubber strap doesn't stretch like it should so it doesn't work well. That makes the trunk area sound like the rear axles is falling out of the car.

      I licked the jack issue already...just wedge the jack sidewise in it's compartment, and JACK IT SNUG against the walls. With a little experimentation with positioning, you can use a towel or rag for a bit of cushioning to pin down the handle in this scheme as well.

        Hmmm, I already have a Towel helping out the Handle and jack rolled in one. Jacking the jack out against the tire, obvious yet I never thought of it.
