weight of a 740 700

I just encountered my first 740. i have a little 240 exposure,(own an old 242) but have never owned, driven in or worked on a 740. I was struck by the massive size of the car. Can anyone tell me, how much does the 4 door sedan weigh?

Hmmm. Odd. My '90 740GLE with all the same features except standard everything, automatic transmission and sunroof, full tank of gas, no wheel covers, came in at 3,318 US pounds last year. This is by an Air Movement scale the Air Force uses to weigh vehicles for air shipment. Color me puzzled.

this is the REAL answer (I ACTUALLY WEIGHED MY CAR) 700

Yes, I actually paid a place (Dept. of Commerce in NYC) to weigh my vehicle when I was fixing up and transferring the title from my parents to my own name. The weight of a 1990 740 with the following:

  • sedan

  • no passenger

  • empty trunk

  • stock spare tire in rear

  • lower IPD chassis brace on front

  • 195/65 tires + 15" steel rims

  • no sunroof

  • b230F (4 cyl, NA) engine

  • i can't think of anything else

  • 1680 front, 1340 rear, 3020 total

    This is in American pounds.

Also, I should note that this means the car (unloaded) has a weight distribution of approximately 55/45 front/rear. Pretty damn good if you ask me.

    weight of a 740- Monty Python's answer 700

"Would that be a European 740, or an African 740? You see a European 740 couldn't possible carry a coconut."

Wouldn't that be from "The Holy Grail" movie? Probably both. But i remember it from the Bridge of Death scene in the Grail flick.

To stay on topic, the curb wieght of my F250 Ford Truck is something like, 4500lbs. Hmmm.

hmmm, my chevy is like 6200 mostly unladen...and I have shaved at least 2300 off it too!

Brickwise, my 740 may or may not be heavier than my 240 was, but it is twice as nimble. The front end of the 740 uses lighter construction. My diesel has an aluminum hood as well...probably to make up for the giant battery.

That's a great link. Something to bookmark.

BTW, you can collect the curb weights from there too.

      Ummm ... no. 700

A 740 does not weight 2 tons - at least not empty. As crazy_brick stated, 3200-3400 lbs is where it's at.

Back to JCM ... it's really not that much larger than a 240. It is a tad wider, and the box shape does make it look bigger, however.

        Ummm ... no. 700

The Haynes Manual gives the following kerb weights:

        740- 1270 to 1460kg

        760- 1330 to 1500kg

I think most models are somewhere close to the upper weight figure :)

Observation: Although the 700 is bigger than the 200 it doesn't drive like a big car. All of the 200s I have driven (I loved them dearly) have been like lorries!

No - GVW vs. curb weight ... 700

          From Google ...
Definitions of Gross vehicle weight (GVW) on the Web:

"The total weight of a vehicle including all of its contents and passengers."

          "Weight of vehicle, including payload."

"The unladen weight of a vehicle plus the weight of the load carried of that vehicle."

"Means the maximum authorized total weight of a vehicle, including its load."

"The weight of the vehicle including driver, passengers, optional and aftermarket equipment, and all cargo."

          Where as curb weight ...

Definitions of Curb weight on the Web:

"The empty weight of a vehicle full of fuel and all fluids. Curb weight does not include passengers or payload."

"Weight of vehicle with full gas tank and no passengers or cargo."

"The weight of an empty vehicle, without cargo and driver and passengers, but including maximum amounts of fuel, oil, coolant and standard equipment, including the spare tire and tools."

3200-3400 lbs depending on the options that were put on the car. Ie turbo's weigh more than a GL. Hope this helps.
