Wipers fixed - It's all in the gas guage 444-544

About three weeks ago I posted a help message for wipers that no longer worked after replacing the dash. I found no juice getting to the switch but had no idea how to solve it. After looking at the wiring several times, there was an orange wire (originally red)from the wiper switch going directly to the oil and amp lights on the instrument panel, neither of which worked also. Along this wire there is a connector, the type that goes over a post, spliced on the wire. This connector was nowhere near anything to connect it to so I initially wrote it off as a previous owner modification of some sort. Big mistake.

I found from the wiring diagram, that the power for the turn signals, wipers, oil light and amp light all come together at the power side of the gas guage, which is the only post and nut connection under the dash.

I am sure there is a proper order to connect all the wiring under the dash that I had no knowledge of, but that wire and connector had to be rerouted to get up to the gas guage and all is solved. It sure drove me crazy for a while but it also was good to finally get it solved.

Congrats on firing up your wipers. It is such a bother driving in the rain without them.

You managed to reduce play in the shafts while the dash was out too, didn't you? Is that something that can be accomplished without removing the dash? My passenger side wiper keeps flopping over far enough to jam the mechanism. The driver's side wiper works fine with the passenger wiper arm off so it's cyclops wipers until the other shaft is righted.

Tightening the outboard nut on the passenger wiper arm shaft didn't do the trick so I suspect there is something amiss on the inside way up behind the dash -- in the dark -- where only contorsionists dare to go.

I went to ACE hardware and got two sizes of brass tubing that can be cut and inserted into the shaft hole for the loose right side washer post. The amount of wear will determine which size to use, but an eyeball estimate put me in the ball park for the initial buy. Tubes come in 1 foot lengths.

      Joe,
The fix to the sloppy wiper travel might be done with the wipers in place but I had them off the car after the dash was out of the way for my fix.
There is a plate on the spindle and above the bracket that got out of position. When it is in the proper position, it limits the travel. Hell, I didn't even know it was there until the whole wiper motor and linkage was on the workbench, then this little plate was visible. This plate has a couple little bumps on it that fit into corresponding holes in the bracket and it is the same width as the bracket so if you loosten the spindle on the outside, you should be able to see this plate clearly if it is out of place. The passenger side is a lot easier to see.

If the plate is in the proper position, it looks like the bracket is double thickness at the spindle. The problem I had was a bent bracket, so there was no way for it to match up to the plate. A little straightening with some vice grips and it matched up just fine. I hope this helps, good luck with it.

    congrats Dennis,
it's amazing what a pain in the a** forty+ years of home repairs can cause with wiring.

I am glad you got them working. I am going to try to get mine to work in a week or so.
