Hey, Im still pretty new here, and was just curious to see what some of you think about a project car Im thinking of getting. It's supposidly (I havent seen it in person yet) a 1983 242 flathood (it has nothing to make me think it isnt a real one, fits the profile; black, sunroof, turbo, flathood, but I have no way of knowing I just like the 242s) it has the flat hood, and virgo wheels, but no engine, tranny or driveshaft, exhaust, and dash. Yeah, lots of stuff missing, but I have an 83 parts car I can take the dash, radiator, and a good part of the interior from, and I have a turbo and intercooler stilling in my garage, but that stills leaves the engine and tranny and and misc. parts I need to get from the junkyard. The car is 160 dollars so Ill probly pick it up anyways but, is it worth my while to look for a b21ft and m46 combo to swap in, or...?

If the chassis is sound, it could be a fun and worthwhile project. IMHO, all 240 turbos are fun project cars but there are only a few model 240s that may be considered collectables. The 78-80 GT (especially the 79) and the Flathoods. With only 500 made and 20 or so converted to race cars, that only left about 480 over 20 years ago.
Mechanically, the Flathood shared all the other hardware from the '83 Turbo (plus a factory i/c).
Have fun. I am.

On another thread, i used the term "discovering plutonium by accident". I think that applies here, too.

Hello,
It probably is a real flathood, and you can check by getting the serial number and comparing it to the list on the flathood website (sorry can't remember it - google it).
Otherwise, it looks like a clean, rust free frame and that's 90% of the battle with a 240 won already. Powertrains are easily obtained for cheap, or a rotten car with a good engine will do the trick too.

Can't find the link just now, but one brickboarder has installed a B230FT in a 240, more zing.
He had a site with every step, including how to make things work regarding the distributor. B230FT stock has distributor on the rear of the camshaft. Made for the 700 series, Won't fit in a 240.
Enjoy whatever ride you get.

I don't know if this page was made by a Brickboarder or not, but here's a site documenting one Brick driver's installation of a 760T engine in a 245 body. I'd love to have a car like that--one gets the refined nature of the later cars with the powerful engine previously seen only in the earlier 240s.

If you have the time and the space it makes sense. I do my best to work out how long a project will take and multiply by three. An d it usually takes longer, but I'm a bit meticulous. I know some guys who could do this in a couple of days, but you know there would be all sorts of loose wires behind the dash etc...

YUMMM! nice chassis to start with. I'd be all over that thing if i weren't knee deep in my nephew's 740 right now. I have been scouring some boards for parts and see some turbo motors and such around. You've got some good potential there.
Best of luck!

Hey thanks, I just wanted to make sure I wasnt crazy.. well, OK I know Im crazy, but I just wanted to make sure it wasnt just plain stupid. I have a place to store it and Ive always wanted to have a project car, so I think I'm going to give this one a chance, as for time, weither its done in a week or a couple years, I like to just wrench on things for fun in my spare time(I know, its a disease...)and hopefully the wirings mostly there. hmmmmmm ::cartoon thinking bubble:: IPD turbo exhaust, sway bars, rebuilding a B21FT, some sporty seats, put in my intercooler, it already has Eibach spings, new poly suspension rubber, chasis braces... ;-) Well, if all goes well Ill be adding this 240 to my volvo family, right along side my yellow 245 known as "the yellow submarine"

I thought I saw the exact same brick on eBay with just the "body" sans engine, etc.
Looks great!
Best,
