how do I know if I have IRS differential? 900 1994

I am needing to order a new exhaust system and apparently there are two different differentials. Any pictures of an IRS diff?

never mind. I found out.

Hi paddling brick,

I know you figured it out, but I thought I give some info anyway :) The only 940 that had IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) was the "SE". I believe the SE was only sold in '91, athough I thought I saw a newer version reciently. The easy way to be positive is hang your head under the back of the car and look at the axle. Is pretty obvious if it's a solid rear axle (looks like the rear axle on a truck). IRS is nice, but the soild rear axle is stronger and less complicated. Are you getting a Volvo exhaust? If not, I highly recommend it as the last time a checked they were relatively inexpensive considering the quality and lifetime warranty on the mufflers themselves.

I had planned on buying one from Groton. I only need the front and rear muffler. The tail pipe is very solid and the axle pipe is brand new. Are you suggesting buying an exhaust system from a volvo dealer or one using the same brand name ie. starla, brosal, etc that are sold by import parts suppliers?

Hi Paggling brick,

Yeah, I'm suggesting buying the whole kit (cat back) from Volvo. At least here, the prices have dropped quite a bit in the last year or two. Use to be like $400-$500 CDN and they're now around $300 CDN I think. Not bad at all considering the quality, lifetime warranty on the mufflers (you could save your pipes) and you get every component needed (except the bracket around the rear muffler I think). If I were you, I'd at least call a dealer or two and see how the pricing is. If the prices have changed like here, you may be pleasently surprised. If not, then get the 2 mufflers from Groton like you were planning. Post what you find out too, someone else might like to know :) Oh also, I think there's a Volvo dealer that Brickboarder's use ("Borton" maybe). I don't know if they're near you, but they might have an even better deal on a Volvo cat-back.

Just an FYI - Borton Volvo is in Minneapolis. Think they might give you a BB discount if you ask. They have a website - don't have it bookmarked - and will ship cross-country. Might be worth a try....
