Steering Rack Failure 900

Recently I noticed a vibration coming through my steering wheel during steady state driving. I figured that it would be bushing related because it did not transmit through the brake pedal like a warped disc. Also, it disappeared after the brakes were applied. Doing some unrelated work on the weekend I noticed a clicking sound when wiggling the steering wheel. Got under the car and checked the outer and inner tie rods - no play in them. Unfortunately there seems to be play within the rack itself. This could be felt while a friend wiggled the wheel back and forth. Looks like I may have to buy a new rack. Anyone else have similar experiences?

Thanks,
Don

    Steering Rack Failure 900

    Dear Don,

May this find you well. Is the vibration more pronounced at one speed or speed range, versus another, e.g., more at 60 or 65-70 Kmh?

Does the steering wheel move slightly, from side to side?

Has your car hit any solid object, at highway speed (100Kmh or higher)?

I have a steering wheel flutter, evident at 58-55 MPH, the result of a road hazard. However, it does not seem to be steering rack related.

Thanks for any insights you can offer.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

Yes, the vibration is more pronounced and may be affected by load (i.e. number of people in the car). I will wait until I install my snow tires in a few weeks in order to rule out any tire-related vibration. My big concern now is the clicking noise I heard and then felt in the steering rack itself when I inspected the rack and inner tie rods under the boots.
