Front Whel Bearing Races 200

I'm putting new bearings in my '87 240 wagon and need some advice. (1st timer here) In the hub where you install the races do you seat the race completely into the hub? I started to install the races and wasn't sure how deep to seat them. Can you use a blunt punch to tap the races in or is it necessary to have a special tool? Also, do I fill the inside of hub with grease as well? any help, thank you.

John

Front Whel Bearing Races -wheel bearing replacement info and part numbers. 200

Here's a lengthy post that details front wheel bearing replacement for a 240/260 vehicle:

You should be able to seat the races all the way down until they stop. I used wood blocks cut to size to get as much contact with the race as I tapped it in. -and they didn't twist sideways or bind up on me. I also put the races in the freezer (the steel shrinks slightly as they get cold) for a few hours before assembly, and coated them and the hub with a thin film of synthetic Mobil 1 grease before I put them in. When assembled, I packed as much grease as I could in there.

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

Off topic a bit but I found your comment funny.

I just did Upper and Lower Ball joints on a Ford Explorer 4 wheel Drive. They are pressed into the Knuckle. I too put the Ball joints in the Freezer overnight. A few 1000th's makes a big difference when Banging those babies in.

Check out this section of the FAQ - the process is the same.

Good luck

John,

The races seat as deeply as you can drive them. They stop at the inner ridge in the hub. I use the old races to drive in the new, if the old stick in the hub with the new race, I tap them back out with a drift. The inside hub cavity is filled with grease ... with enough center left open for the spindle to run through. Make sure you replace the grease seals while you are at it. You should get a Bentley 240 Volvo manual. All sorts of very good repair and servicing info in that book. Hope this helps.
