760/960 heater core replacement.. 900

It's time to do the heater core on my wagon. I noticed that the FAQ mentions how to change out the core on the ACC/MCC cars (old style dash). It's lacking on the info for the ECC equipped cars (88-90 760, 91 940SE, 92-94 960).

To anyone who's braved this job before on a car with ECC (this means a 240, 260, 740, pre-88 760, etc don't interest me):

Got pictures or advice?

Make 100% sure your core is leaking! I almost changed mine a couple months back but a brickhead here saved my ass (wish I could remember his name to thank him). If you changed your heater hoses a cuple months before you started getting coolant in the cabin make sure the leak is not coming into the cabin via the hose to heater core nipple connection. I did not believe this myself untill I pressure tested the core and replaced the hoses, cleaned the core nipples, redid the connections. Never did have to replace the core and that was months and K's of miles ago, believe it or not!

Best to purchase the OEM manual on Climate Control systems for the pictures and detailed instructions. Expensive but worth it.

I have what appears to be the earliest copy of the manual that covers ECC. From the pictures it appears as if you have to take the whole dash and then the ECC unit out (which would include the A/C evaporator). I'm aiming to avoid that mess.

I replaced the heater core on the '90 765 one year ago. You don't need a manual if you attack the job methodically. I used baggies and masking tape with permanent marker and carefully market individual pieces upon removal. I kept a sequence log when each part/assembly was removed, started at the radio and center console and burrowing back. Take digital pics, too. Arrange removed parts in order of removal. Have good, small hand tools, 1/4 drive sockets and torx bits. The air ducting closest to the core was about the hardest to remove but finally popped free. I did not disturb the climate control console, all the work was beneath that. plan on developing contortionist skills. The job took me a weekend. A year later, heat's fine. chris in vermont, 244, 765, 945.
