OK, I found the trunk hold-up mechanism... 444-544

You were right. I thought it looked like it had once had torsion springs, but by crawling inside the trunk to take a close look at the left side hinge, I found the ratchet mechanism that is supposed to keep the trunk lid up.

Naturally, it was frozen up from years of disuse, but a little penetrating grease fixed that. Now the pawl turns with a little resistance, but it doesn't come to a stop at the right place to catch the hinge and hold it up.

By fiddling with it with a fingertip I can get it to hold, then it DOES release properly when you lift the lid higher and shut it. I can probably get entirely inside so I can see what I'm doing and torque the pieces just right so they work properly.

I was probably thrown off by the stick in the trunk. Old-fashioned lid prop!

I agree that it's a bad idea to have this only on one hinge. Everything but the pawl is already on the other side. I wonder if I might remove the existing pawl, duplicate it from steel, then link the two together with a steel rod so they always work in tandem. Two mechanisms working each by themselves would tend to get hung up or out of sync pretty easy.

What do you think?

    Steve,
Sounds like a good idea to me. If you decide to go that route, please let us know how it worked for you. Meanwhile I'm trying to locate the Lift-O-Mat gas struts the guy in Switzerland used. NAPA can probably match them if I could figure out what their pressure should be in Lbs/sq inch. They are of similar dimensions as the 245 hatch struts but about half the power and a 19 mm diameter cylinder instead of 22 mm - might be 45 Lbs/ sq inch if my conversion from Newtons is correct. I have located a Lift-O-Mat distributor in Connecticut and am waiting for a reply as to availability of that particular strut by part number. I still like the gas strut approach because it neutralizes the bozos who try to force the lid down.

I agree absolutely! That is a really elegant solution. I was thinking of making the brackets and then hitting the local junkyards and just trying
anything in the right length (try spelling THOSE two words together!!)

The brackets should be easy, I can make them of steel or aluminum, although I think steel would be a little easier to work with and less expensive. Grade 8 bolts, though. Lots of pressure, and you wouldn't want to be under there and have a bolt shear off!

My retail source of choice out here would be Pep Boys because they have a whole aisle filled with them. Better than going in and ordering something and waiting for delivery!

As far as the stock setup, it's pretty obvious that the bean-counters took over and deleted one mechanism. Otherwise why have two basic hinges that would accept that 10-cent part? I can't believe that any Volvo engineer worthy of his job would approve of the twisting torque that using just one lock would insure!

I'm sure the out of sync thing nixed a double locking hinge plan. And a spring mechanism as used on the 120 would have to be unreasonably powerful to cope with the vertical 'open' position of the 544 truck as oppsed to the vertical positi9on of the 120 truck. Struts do have the advantage of having a variable effective spring rate (so the lid can rest closed and still support the weight when open) but weren't available then.

I have a 64 544 and when I got it the trunk lid didn't fit properly at the top on the left side due to folks not knowing to lift the lid first before it would release the mechanism. To solve the problem, I just put some extra 'up' force on the left side and that fixed the alignment problem. I then (having 3 more 544 parts cars) took one of the mechanisms off of another car and put it on the right side using the entire hinge mechanism and it works fine. As long as they are working freely they will latch and unlatch fine--at least it works for me. And much easier than trying to make one.

I think you're both right. I can go either way, and adding a ratchet to the right side is easiest, even though I'll have to make one from scratch.

I'll try that first, and if I'm not satisfied I can then easily remove both pawls and make a set of brackets and figure out which gas struts to use.

Actually, the 'stick' method works OK, except when I bump it...
