760 turbo starting problem 700

okay i was leaving work today and when i was pulling onto the highway, my car wouldn't pick up speeed and was bogging like it was running like it ran out of gas... the turbo wouldn't spool up correctly either. then it just died about 30 secs later and i coasted to a stop. so i walked to the gas station and got a gallon of gas and came back and put it in there and it still wouldn't start.

i can hear the fuel pump make a whirring noise and the engine will turn over, but now it wont start at all.

my guesses were either fuel or electrical problem...

i really have no idea what happened so help me out guys, i love my volvo more than anything and i cant really afford to bring it to someone to fix, i am very mechanical so if it can be done, i can do it. i just need some guidence.

    760 turbo starting problem 700

okay, i was being a blabbering idiot earlier. but

i know its not the AMM.

this time when i popped off the fuel rails w/ the injectors and when i cranked her over, no gas came out. i am definately getting spark and the fuel pump makes a noise.

im not all too sure what it really could be... could the fuel pump still make a noise and be "messed up" or could it be fuel pump relay? pressure regulator?
i checked the fuses and they all seem to be okay.

im pretty clueless as far as fuel delivery goes, any more suggestions?

'89 760 TI For reference this car is equiped with a Bosch LH 2.2 Fuel system.

There is a little conflict in your statements concerning wheather fuel is coming out of the injectors or not. Lets assume it is not or is intermittant and make a couple of other checks.

There are two fuel pumps in this system. A low pressure pre pump in the tank and the main high pressure fuel pump below the car under the drivers seat. You said that the fuel pump makes a noise. This is good unless it is a loud noise. If the main pump makes a "groaning" noise, it could mean that the pre pump is not working. Remove the gas cap and listen for a sound coming from the pre pump to confirm that it is running. What is the fuel level in the tank? There is a short hose in the fuel tank that connects the pre pump to the outpt tube and if this breaks sometimes the fuel is not properly delivered to the main pump. This problem is masked if more than 1/2 tank of gas. We can come back to this later if needed.

Assuming the main pump is running and not making any horrible noises. This is good as it indicates that the and fuel pump relay is working properly. (Green relay in the relay tray in pasanger footwell.) This also indicates that the hall sensor in the distributor is working. This sensor tells the ecu that the cam is turning, engine cranking, to enable the fuel pump and ignition system. If you had no spark and no pump running we would suspect either this relay or the hall sensor. Note: If fuel delivery is intermittant, these two items become suspect again.

Next thing to check is the radio suspression relay, RSR. This relay provides power to the fuel injectors. First check: listen to the injectors by holding the tip of a long screw driver to the injector body and the handle of the screwdriver to your ear. As someone cranks the engine, you should hear a 'ticking' sound. If not, suspect the RSR. It is black, 1" by 2" by 2.5" and is attached to a bracket on the driver side shock tower just inboard of the power steerng fluid tank. You are lucky, as there are two identical relays on this bracket. The second is for powering the electric cooling fan in front of the radiator. Swap the two relays and see if the problem goes away. If so, you have found the problem. Just need to fix or replace the bad relay.

Post back any updates. I am sure the board will help you solve this problem. Research more details in the FAQ. I have tried to hit some of the high spots, but there is very good detailed informaion in there.

      Dan

    What model year?

You need to find out if you have spark and fuel pressure at the fuel rail and the injectors are firing.

Check to see if your timing belt maybe slipped and or broke. If it is broken that is easy to see by observing the cam through the oil fille port while cranking.

      What model year?

      its a 1989 760 turbo

how would i go about checking the fuel pressure? unbolt the fuel rail and pop out the injector and give it some gas to see if gas comes out?

i can see that the cam lobe has moved, so we can mark out broken timing belt.

it has spark and when i poped out the fuel rail and cranked it over, fuel came out. the timing belt isn't broke.

        what else could it be?
